ESA launches are made from Kourou, French Guiana in South America.
I am confused. I thought Guiana was in Africa.
I bet the Beer there is very good though.

In Africa there are Republic of Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. In South America, French Guiana and Guyana (Co-operative Republic of Guyana). In Asia there are Papua New Guinea and Western New Guinea. I wouldn't be surprised if there are even more in the World ;-)
I would mix up my Guineas and Guianas too, hehe. But yeah, Florida is in fact closer and easier as ESA indeed launches from the French colonies. Seems kinda bizarre but with Guiana almost on the equator, it does save on delta-V for a lot of orbits. Enough that it warrants shipping the parts all the way to South America. Besides, with the site being so out of the way, I think in Guiana you basically end up standing in the jungle to see a launch, contracting malaria while you're at it. I'd much rather stand in Florida on a site designed for observers and visit KSC and go full-on space tourist while I'm at it.

Makes perfect sense to me too!! I've been to Florida and drove past KSC but they weren't launching, I was taking my oldest son to visit some colleges, he's really smart and now has his PHD in Chemistry. He wanted to see the beach and the colleges near it but his final choice was James Madison University in Virginia. He decided to be a medium fish in a big pool instead of the smartest fish in a smaller pool, meaning there were people both smarter and less smart than him there so he had the complete degree experience.
Quite a different setting indeed! Virginia seems nice too. I was supposed to do a trip from Norfolk on an APL charter (the container line) back in my engineering days. But the vessel switched charters the week before I joined and I ended up doing a tour bouncing up and down the Mediterranean and the Far East. That was a little upsetting as I had really looked forward going to Norfolk. Ach, what can you do.

Norfolk is/was a USNavy town and therefore had alot of people coming and going, then you throw in the tourists and even more people were coming and going, I was stationed there for 3 years and couldn't wait to get out of there. Later on in life my f-i-l loved a town called Sandbridge which was just South of Norfolk and we rented a beach house there every year for a week for many years. It was MUCH better even though it was still a tourist town but it wasn't much over 50% locals and 50% tourists so it was very nice. There is a USCoast Guard Station there but you almost never saw the people so I'm guessing it was/is more about intelligence gathering than actual cruising around in their ships.
