<major>5</major>
<minor>2</minor>

... and ...

<nv_compute_capability_major>5</nv_compute_capability_major>
<nv_compute_capability_minor>2</nv_compute_capability_minor>

5 to 6 and 2 to 1 ... and then I saved the file and changed its file permissions to 'read-only'.

I don't know if it's necessary (in linux) but I also restarted Boinc. Startup log then gave one error saying something like "couldn't delete old coproc_info.xml " . Log also showed CUDA compute capability 6.1 for this GPU. This situation was good enough to run 1.28 tasks

Yeah in windows it’s a little

Yeah in windows it’s a little easy that you can just set it to read only. Requires the extra step in Linux.

. . Again with the oops. I had only changed the second pair of lines. I missed the first pair and I set permissions to read - anyone, change - nobody, but did not know about the chattr command. How do I restore editing to correct it? Is it the same but -i ?  ... OK I tried that and it worked. Now getting ver 1.28 tasks ... YAY!!

. . Again the help is much appreciated ... :)

yes your intuition was right.

yes your intuition was right. setting -i is the right way to reverse it. :)

. . I have now applied the same process to the i5-6600 with the 2 x GTX970's.  I think something must have changed in the 1.28 app, been improved or corrected, because they are producing run times almost as good as the 1060's.  They were running at 17 mins even, now they are running at 11 mins even on the cooler card and slightly longer on the more heat affected unit.

. . 17/11 = 1.545 and that is still a 55% improvement.  Admittedly the lowest of all the cards I have tested with but still pretty impressive.  Not sure why the boffins decided to limit the app to 6.1 and higher, 5.2 seems to be doing just fine.  Looking at the coproc_info file all of the maxwell cards are rated for OpenCL3.0, and that is as per the project specs, not a hack. The only drawback is that even on a cool early spring night with the windows open and the fans at 100% it is running in the mid 70's.  I was considering using the 970 tweak to run them at performance level P3 instead of P2 but I think I would have to man the fire extinguishers. :(

 . . So Keith ...  wanna take another shot with your 970's ??  :)

70C is no problem. Don’t

70C is no problem. Don’t sweat it. You can run these things up to 80C all day. Only when you approach 90C do you start seeing throttling and slowdowns to protect the card.

. . Actually, after rebooting with the new settings the fans defaulted to a low speed. And while I was tinkering with other things the temps crept up very quickly. When I looked at psensor the 'hot card' had climbed to 80 in the usual arcing curve but then suddenly flattened out at exactly the 80 mark. So I think there was something happening there by way of throttling. The cooler card climbed in that smooth arc until  it hit about 74 but with no flattening of the rising curve. I tend to monitor these things and have noticed that the GPU clock speed displayed in the nvidia control panel shows some decrease in the clock speed as it nears the 70 mark, which I think is why the hot card takes those few seconds longer on most tasks, but no major obvious shut down of the card. The 970's are Gainward cards and are pretty solid builds so I am hoping they will take the heat as well as any card can. The 1050ti is a low profile card by MSI (it was in the HP unit which died and that has a SFF case) so small heat sink and small fans, and has been replaced once under warranty because the poor little fans seized up.  So that was why I wanted to get 1.28 running on the ASUS 950 dual which has 2 nice big fans :).  But even the hot 970 is holding at about 70 to 74 now, so I will persevere with the testing for a while longer :)

. . It is nice to see them producing so well. And I am still tempted to poke the bear and tweak them up to P3 :)

 . . In case you didn't see

. . In case you didn't see my message in S@H orphans the tweak took nicely thanks muchly.  And the 1.28 tasks are now running @ about 10 mins neat.  This gives the cards a net gain of 70% much like the GTX950.

 . .  NOICE!

. . Thanks to the help you guys have given.  BTW if you have contact with the boffins that run the show you might let them know that CC5.2 works very well with the new app.

. . PS - just read your reply in S@H orphans so disregard the last part :)
