Tom, this is exactly why I asked for the coproc_info.xml file. I don't really care what the log says, because the log is just reading the data from the coproc_file.

When the boinc client starts up, it checks your system for the GPUs (coprocessors) and generates the coproc_info.xml file, that file then gets read to tell BOINC what GPUs you have, what their capabilities are, etc. BOINC only considers GPUs that are in that file. if they aren't then BOINC can't use them. Manipulation of this coproc_info file is exactly how some savvy users are able to fool BOINC into thinking you have more GPUs than you really do, or have different GPUs than you really do, or have different drivers than you really do...

so can you post the contents of the coproc_info.xml file that was generated by the AIO client? My theory is that something isn't working right in detecting AMD cards (bad hooks to the driver? buggy drivers?) or writing the coproc file with AMD cards when you have several types, leading to either omissions or errors in the file. this could have been a bug that was corrected (intentionally or unintentionally) between the 7.16.5 code in the AIO and the 7.16.6 code in the repository.

Now it used to be I could get the AIO to recognize either my Rx 5700's or my Rx 460/570/580's but not at the same time.

If I ever catch up with a new download of AIO I may find that behavior again.  Or maybe not.

I have been having this issue since Linux 18 so I am pretty sure its not the operating system.

When I stumbled into trying out the Repository version of the Boinc Manager the first thing I noticed is it was finding both Rx 5700 cards and the Rx 460/570/580 cards.

The second thing I noticed is after an Rx 5700 threw a "computation error" that card was "automagically" idled, it burned time but got no more cpu cycles.

I still want to see the

I still want to see the coproc file, that was generated with BOTH GPU types installed. put one 570 and one 5700 in, posts the lspci command showing they are both there, then post the associated corpoc file.

 

I think we'd all like you to try with the pandora client also, just for completeness since it's not really based on the same 7.16.5 code base.

 

but ultimately, a way you can kinda-sorta solve this when using the AIO/pandora,

 

1. just take the coproc_info.xml file from the repository version (the one that you claim works properly), and drop it into your BOINC AIO folder.

2. change the permissions to read-only (right click in the GUI -> Properties)

3. then lock the file so that BOINC can't overwrite it

sudo chattr +i coproc_info.xml

All test versions, Windows, AIO and repository report the 5700 in the coproc_info.xml.

Lspci picks it up also with the AIO and repo.

But the AIO client somehow skips over the 5700 when it reads the coproc_info.xml.

An experiment to try would be to copy the repo version of coproc_info.xml to the AIO installation and lock the file from being altered by the client as Ian showed you how to do.

I'm thinking some extraneous unreadable character in the AIO version file is preventing the file from being read correctly or something.

Or the way that TBar compiled the code in the AIO makes the 5700 drop off from being recognized by the client.

Were these coproc_info files pulled back to back? from the same system, and did you run them both (to generate new coproc files) to verify that the AIO version isn't working while the repo version is? again, was the back to back with the ONLY change being the boinc version. same driver install and everything. I need to rule out the possibility that you're pulling old data from the AIO and hasnt been run recently or something. Please confirm.

 

I didnt see any obvious error in the coproc file as far as structure. and both detect the 5700, so that's good. However, I did spot that the AIO version is detecting a different driver that the repo version (and this is why I asked if this data was really from a back to back test).

Don't think so because the call and response for Linux and Windows is different.  Look at the last lines for the probe for Nvidia and ATI cards. 

The Windows coproc file just says the platform isn't found while the Linux one says it can't find the specific Linux OpenCL libraries.

Also it could be possible the numbering of the driver releases might be coincident with the Linux and Windows platform.

I ran each test with

I ran each test with different hard drives.  So I can go back and try uninstalling and then re-installing the drivers. Since I was using a copy of the Ubuntu driver off a flash drive the only difference I can see that is even possible would be the difference between an "amdgpu-install" and an "amdgpu-pro-install" both using the latest version of the command line.

It is certainly possible I screwed up copying the information from the coproc_info.xml files.

I am currently pooped out on this particular testing. And have re-allocated the test bench to a different MB (MSI B360-F Pro).

So will take a look at this again on Monday.
