Another task has completed and a third is running. Yesterday I had a cumulative Windows 1903 update on my PC, home edition.

11GB?  For the GW task?

Yes, that is what GPU-Z

Yes, that is what GPU-Z says-

he's talking about total system RAM use, not the GPU RAM use, and not even the ram used by just that application, total including whatever else he's running on the system

Tullio has a habit of including a lot of unnecessary information in his posts. so you have to read between the lines and ignore the superfluous junk that doesnt matter like about windows updates or how many tasks Science United sends him.

GPU-Z seems to give different information on different computers.  On the first image below, "memory used (dynamic)" is what you're after, it's how much memory the graphics card is using from your system RAM.  On the second image, which I took from a different computer, it doesn't show that useful reading, but shows what presumably you saw which is "system memory used", which is totally meaningless, it's the total RAM used for everything you're running, including stuff which has nothing to do with Boinc or your graphics card.

I ran some tasks on my gaming

I ran some tasks on my gaming computer to get a feel for how well these tasks run on a fast system and play around with some config changes.

the tasks definitely like a fast CPU and fast GPU memory.

system specs:

  • single 2080ti @ ~2000MHz, PL to 225W
  • i7-9700k @ 4.9GHz 8c/8t
  • 16GB dual-channel DDR4-3200 CL16 system ram

this gave ~80% GPU utilization for nearly the whole run (which is rather good), and the GPU was being used up to it's power limit. CPU core utilization was ~115-130%. i varied GPU memory speed a bit to see if it made any difference. I tried to do this will all the same kinds of tasks since some frequencies just run longer than others.

with GPU memory at 14000MHz, run times were ~318s (100%)

with GPU memory at 14500MHz, run times were ~307s (96.5%)

with GPU memory at 15000MHz, run times were ~300s (94.3%)

so overclocking the GPU memory by 1000MHz gets us about 5-6% speed boost in this particular system. I didnt run many tasks like this so I can't say how stable it would be long term, or how stable this would be on other projects. I usually don't OC GPU memory beyond P0 clocks on nvidia cards, but I was curious to see what parts of a system need a speedup to help these tasks along. GPU mem OC works, but watch stability closely. too much mem OC is easy to cause errors or instability.

I think with faster GPUs, you need faster CPUs to support them. at least for the nvidia cards. my GTX 1650 / i3-8100-[at]-3.6GHz combo is able to hit 90% GPU utilization.  great for a weak CPU, but also a weak GPU.

by contrast. my system on older base hardware, seem to have trouble keeping the GPU utilization up even with slower GPUs the best these systems get is about 70-75% GPU utilization (not bad, could be worse)

  • [7] 2080 @ ~2000MHz core 14000MHz mem, PL to 185W
  • E5-1680v2 @ 3.8GHz 8c/16t
  • 32GB quad-channel DDR3-1600 CL11 ECC system ram

  • [10] 2070 @ ~2000MHz core 14000MHz mem, PL to 160W
  • 2x E5-2680v2 @ 3.1GHz 10c/20t
  • 32GB quad-channel DDR3-1866 CL13 Reg ECC system ram

Sometimes you think you know someone, but get it wrong.  I never had you down as a gamer.

I never overclock anything.  I used to, but it made things wear out way faster than they should.  If they could go that fast 24/7, they'd have been set that way by the manufacturer to sell at a higher price.

I only have AMD cards, and even with a weak card and a comparatively strong CPU, it still can't run them very well (70%).  So I stick to Gamma.  Maybe better GPUs don't need so much CPU assistance?  Because the best GPU is a LOT faster than the one I'm using on this machine, but the best CPU isn't better by so big a factor.  And if I had a GPU with enough RAM to run two GW tasks, that might work better.

It's infrequent anymore, but i like building computers so i made a 'gaming' system. it's off most of the time really. and i use it as kind of a 'do whatever' system. i havent actually played any games for a while

I have 3 validated results on

I have 3 validated results on GW GPU tasks. In all 3 my computer is the fastest, even when compared to PCs with a faster CPU. My GTX 1060 is performing very well, all contrary advices ignored.

what about those two tasks from just yesterday that errored out from not enough memory?

https://einsteinathome.org/host/12735373/tasks/6/0

it works fine... until it doesn't. that's why you shouldn't use cards with less than 4GB right now. unless you're fine trashing work every now and then and letting someone else process it?

As do I, it gets addictive.  I love finding cheap old parts on Ebay and assembling stuff.  Probably not the most efficient in terms of power consumption, but it does mean I never turn the heating on!

I'm now up to 6 machines.  The two latest ones built in the last couple of weeks are twin CPU xeons.  6 cores + HT each, so 48 threads between them.  Those do Rosetta, Universe, and LHC.  One of them (based on a Dell R510 motherboard) seems to be very happy with multiple GPUs (other machines crash the Radeon driver if I try to use more than one on risers), so I'll add more to that for Einstein later.  I like their limit of 128GB RAM per board, which comes in handy for the rather large LHC Atlas tasks.

Actually I'm only really addicted to Civilisation (since it came out in the early 90s).  Occasionally the Sims and some car racing games.

I never have anything off.  Everything runs Boinc 24/7.  One of my machines (this one) pauses Boinc (or just the GPU) if I play certain games via exclusive applications, but otherwise full steam ahead.  And yes I've bought an air conditioner....
