Yes it is amazing what you can do with 2,602 computers

When I was working I REALLY TRIED to get the just over 10k pc's in my local county to run Boinc, instead they made a deal with the power company to get a break if they shut down all the pc's at night time. They put in a system where if you weren't physically in front of your pc at 7pm in the evening your pc would automatically shutdown, it came up with a box saying the pc would shutdown in 10, 9, 8..etc, and then it did. I was the first line pc tech for just over 1600 of them, you know the guy they called when they didn't 'work', it was usually operator error and since I made less than the 'real' IT folks they saved a ton of money. I was also in charge of scheduling and coordinating the replacement of those 1600 some pc's over the course of 5 years. Most were on a 5 year replacement plan paid for by the State, but the local county paid for ones were on a 4 year plan replacement plan. Another part of the county from me, the tax people, got new pc's EVERY year, with their old ones being handed down to new employees and then replaced after 3 more years. I worked for the Welfare Department, NO welfare work for me as my wife says I have no compassion for that, just IT stuff.

Especially if they have a rack full of these (started appearing late last year) heavy hitters...

 Xeon(R) CPU E5-2658 v4 @ 2.30GHz [Family 6 Model 79 Stepping 1] (56 processors)  256 GB RAM!

Be interesting to know what power they use.

(16 processors)

Operating System

  Microsoft Windows 10 Professional x64 Edition, (10.00.14393.00)
