Bruce and Bernd:
Not more hangups (so far...) with the new .11. I completed 24 hours on my iBook and also on my PowerBook, and no problems spotted. The problem I mentioned above at Message 16195 is apparently fixed.
The PB is running BOINC 4.44 SuperBench Optimized with the .11 E@H as CLI; the iBook is also running the 4.44 SB and .11 E@H, but using MenuBar. All are OS X 10.3.9.
It seems the fix from David Anderson was good enough for single-CPU machines, but I still get bug reports from dual ones. We're working on this, there will probably be another beta test version put up next week.
I have a single processor G4 (450mHz) but am getting the same 'hanging' problem with Einstein 0.11 as with 0.08. I didn't have the problem with the earlier beta versions 0.02 and 0.05, which let BOINC switch between Einstein and SETI seamlessly. As it takes so long for my Mac to run Einstein anyway, and the hanging means nothing gets processed at all, I'm sorry to say I've suspended Einstein till my current SETI units have finished.
I am not completely surprised by this. As I suggested in my earlier post David Anderson's "fix" to the BOINC API library was a bit of a hack, and in fact apparently has not really fixed the problem. I've talked with him about a better way to fix it; he'll implement that soon and we'll have a revised version available.
iMac G5. (single processor) Had a work unit hang yesterday with .11. Just sat there doing nothing. A restart fixed the problem and it appears to have completed and reported. I'll keep an eye on subsequent work units.
This machine is attached to both E@H and Seti@H (both projects using altivec-optimized science applications), 60-minute swap, and with "Leave in memory" set to "Yes": http://einsteinathome.org/task/7127652
I had the same problem that Shaktai described below. E@H completed ~49% of a WU, and just sat there (top says E@H was using 90% of the CPU). Had to restart BOINC to resume computation of the WU. I am not attached to any other BOINC project. (0.11 Einstein client, 10.3.9 OS, 4.44 MacNN G4-optimized command-line BOINC client).
Just to say I have the Altivec enabled Einstein@Home app running with the latest version of Boinic Menubar.(4.43(4))
Installation instructions are as for the command line client but the einstein project directory is in a different place:-
Just do a file search for name containing einstein.phys.uwm.edu .
Quit Boinc Menubar
Upgrade to the latest Bionc Menubar
Drag the downloaded Einstein 0.11 files to the directory you found above.(app_info.xml and einstein_0.11_powerpc-apple-darwin )
Drag the old einstin applcation out of the directory.
Are you running more than one project or E@H by itself?
Phil
Actually, I'm trying to clear the queue of SETI work. The last outage they had really messed a few things up. It is still occasinally trying to switch, so SETI may be a big part of the problem. If I can get this queue cleared then it will be Einstein only.
I am doing exactly the same thing. It seems suspicious to me that most of my hangs involve a switch between S@H and E@H. I actually think that E@H somehow loads prematurely and gets interrupted by S@H. I see a lot of very short term starts and stops in the messages, where S@H has interrupted E@H. Either E@H yields too easy, or S@H is not playing nice. I want to run E@H clean and see if it still stalls. Simply pausing S@H does not stop the interruptions so long as stuff is in the queue. Let us know how it goes on your end.
