As you can see, it shows SETI paused, and Einstein running. However, the time was incrementing on both of them. The estimated time of completion for both was out of kilter because Einstein takes about 5.6 hours, not 45 hours per work unit on my iMac G5. That anomaly was caused by both processes running at once. BOINC manager didn't know what was going on.
this is caused by the SETI App which still has the bug we fixed in our 0.08.
In the SETI App suspending depends on which thread happens to catch a signal, so suspending might work some times, but not always. They need to rebuild their App, too.
Good to know. I have nearly cleared the cache of SETI work units so will then try it with Predictor. In fact, I think you or Bruce mentioned that before and I forgot.

This would be why I've not seen the suspension problem, at least, not when I've checked Activity Monitor to see what's happening. I'm still on version 0.02 of Einstein as I installed version 0.08 shortly after a WU started running and they take a long time on this machine.
Thanks, Bernd, for explaining why it happens and therefore why it might not appear to happen!
It might be worth to piont out that this problem only applies to Apps which have a separate thread for the graphics. LHC, Predictor and CPDN I think thus shouldn't be affetected.
does your preference setting of "Leave applications in memory while preempted?" make any difference to that strange behavior? Please try changing it (don't forget to update the project) and report.

Yes! My machines normally all run with "Yes" for the "Leave in memory" question. I tried switching my Powerbook to the "No" setting, and then it correctly suspends and resumes. I confirmed successful WU resuming both with Activity Monitor and with BOINC Manager "Work" tab stats.
Now I'm returning the machine to the "Yes" setting.
I have just completed the installation of the 08 beta. Your instruction perfect and it went well the first time.
My first install machine is a G4 dual proccessor 1.42 GHz, with 1 g memory and 2 Mb L3 cache per processor, running Mac OS 10.3.9.
using the old release software a typical WU took about 12-14 hours. The Work display shows a little over 7 hr 15 min projected and my calculation based on the first 1% of the WU would say that that will be about right. This would represent a two fold speed increae over the standard software. I tried the screen saver. Not only does it work IT IS CAPTIVATING and STUNNING! At this time (dispite problems mentioned on this list) I am planning to run SETI along side of the Beta to see how it behaves as this is how it would run under normal conditions.
The only problem I noticed was that in preparation for the install I suspended one of the two WU i had in my que. I completed and uploaded the other one. After the install, it detected both the new app and the suspended WU. the New app kicked in and I got an error message related to the remaining WU being for a different APP and then the WU vanished. It the went about getting new work and started running. So far all the buttons work for projects and work unit controls properly on all the projects (Climate, SETI, Einstein, protein).
I also plan to try the menu bar version as it works better with climate than the normal BOINC. I am sure i speak for a lot of Mac guys when I say thanks for your hard work on this great new package. Did I mention the screen saver looks GREAT!
Thanks
Phil

Ok, it crunched over night, and this morning the first WU showed 99% after 7:30Hrs of crunching, and it was just sitting there. Nothing was incrementing but it had downloaded a new WU at some point during the night which it did not process. It had also finished a SETI WU but it did not up load it. After looking things over for a while it became aparent that something was hung up. So I tried to stop BOINC. It would not shut down. The system indicated that it was not responding. I forced Boinc to quit and it did. BUT, I noticed an Einstein application still running in the "Dock" and the system was still showing almost 100% CPU usage. When i clicked on the Dock item it came to the front but it was a blank screen, and the menus for it would not work.
I forced that to quit and the system stats return to a normal idle state. I restarted BOINC to see what the WU looked like, and BOINC would not let me change any displays and at the bottom of the BOINC console it sate "Disconnected from localhost". After watching the spinning spectrum for a while, I tried to restart the system and it would not restart until I forced BOINC to quit.
After restart, BOIC restarted the work unit that seemed to be hung up, and also the new one it got last night. I updated SETI and the completed WU uploaded but nothing came back as the system did not request new work for SETI. The system chewed for a while but the progress for the first WU did not change and it showed 0% complete. The newer WU display seems normal. So I suspended the original WU to see what would happen, and it suspended normally and BOINC switched to the SETI WU. Both the SETI and .08 WU seemd to be running fine. (on the Dual processor it frequently will work on two projects)
I have now turned off the SETI WU to let it chew on the two .08 WUs to see if it will sort itself out. I'll let you know. As far as I can tell it has not yet uploaded anything to einstein.
I noticed something odd on my powerbook this morning (i have not installed the beta on that yet as it was stilll crunching a WU). for the first time it was showing an Einstein disply but it was hung. It was hung so bad that I had to hard boot it to get it up again. I have not had a chance to see what happend there yet. It has never shown the Einstein display before. Very Odd.

Seems that the 008 runs into a problem, probably in the FreeBSD layer. Will take some time to get this fixed. I can confirm that it _might_ hang, and if the screensaver is active, it's hard to get access to it without reboot. Sorry for that, this is Beta test. I suggest for now you turn off the screensaver function if you want to use the 008.

Similar here, though it was apparently all working perfectly in 0.02.
The final WU being processed by 0.02 finished and uploaded overnight. A new one was downloaded and shown as running on 0.08 but there were only '0.00%' and '---'s showing in BOINC Manager. I tried clicking on 'Show graphics' to see if it was just a progress diplaying problem but the graphics window didn't appear.
Activity Monitor showed BOINC Manager running but boinc itself hanging with nothing showing for Einstein. I had to suspend Einstein (and SETI), quit Manager and then launch it again before things went back to normal.
As it takes this Mac ages to crunch a WU, I've just set it not to download more work and see what happens till it's fixed, which I suspect it will be by the time the current WU is finished!
