Thank you for your last

Thank you for your last message. I have downloaded the two files and installed these again. On starting BOINC, the 0.08 file did not disappear any more and everything seems OK. I shall watch what happens when new work will be downloaded and check that it is linked with 0.08 (that should happen in less than 12 hours).

Bernd and Bruce: Thanks

Bernd and Bruce:

Thanks for all your efforts to fix this pausing bug. I just installed .08 on my 1 GHz PowerBook, running 4.44 as CLI. It's resuming a SETI WU at the moment, but should transition to an Einstein WU shortly.

Note that the SETI app also has this bug (bug was in the BOINC application library) -- SETI will rebuild their app soon to fix this.

It's been a few hours and WU

It's been a few hours and WU now, and the .08 E@H appears to be pausing gracefully and letting SETI and CPDN have their turns on my 1 GHz PowerBook G4 with BOINC 4.44 SuperBench. I've only seen one invalid result on my three computers so far, and that was from the 23rd, using the .02 E@H.

Bernd and Bruce: I'd again like to thank you for your efforts in rooting out this bug for us!

Bad news: 0.08 has a suspend

Bad news: 0.08 has a suspend problem, but now in a different way.

Using the same setup as I reported below (http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/forum_reply.php?thread=2352#15935) for 0.05, except now this machine only has a single WU, and only from E@H. Here's the new behavior:

- Upon using the BOINC menubar option "Suspend," the BOINC manager "Work" tab shows the WU as "Suspended", and the "CPU time" and "Progress" stats stop updating. This is all good.

- Activity Monitor shows the einstein_0.08_po thread taking 0.00% CPU (which is good, and a big improvement over einstein 0.05). It takes 2 threads.

- However, Activity Monitor now shows the process "boinc" as taking all available CPU% (about 75% on this machine), and 1 thread. In addition there is the usual process "BOINCManager" taking its usual ~8% CPU and 1 thread.

My cooling fan also reveals that the BOINC "Suspend" is not really suspending.

Then, when I use the BOINC menubar option to return to "Run based on preferences" the "Work" tab shows my sole WU as "Paused", stats there do not update, and Activity Monitor now says:
1) einstein_0.08_po thread taking 0.00% CPU and 2 threads.
2) boinc taking ~20% CPU and 1 thread
3) BOINCManager taking ~8% CPU and 1 thread

In effect, upon returning to "Run based on preferences," the WU now truly pauses.

Then, when I use the the BOINC menubar option to shift to "Run always" the "Work" tab still shows my sole WU as "Paused", stats still don't update, and Activity Monitor now says:
1) einstein_0.08_po thread taking 0.00% CPU and 2 threads.
2) boinc taking ~80% CPU and 1 thread
3) BOINCManager taking ~8% CPU and 1 thread

Thus by using "Run always" I can return it to the weird state it had when I first selected "Suspend."

Hope this is useful,

Alan, I have not been able to reproduce boinc taking 80% of CPU time. On my system when I do what you describe I see BOINCManager take 10% of CPU and boinc take 0.2%.

Could you confirm that you are using the "Recommended version (standard GUI) 4.43" from the BOINC download page ? What if you use the 4.72 development version from the BOINC dev download page ?

I was indeed using BOINC GUI 4.43, installed April 29, 2005, back when it was called "advanced GUI". But just in case, I have now downloaded and installed a fresh copy of BOINC "standard" GUI 4.43. I do recall that BOINC 4.43 "advanced GUI" for Mac did get promoted to "standard" status between when I originally downloaded it and now.

This does improve the behavior, but not entirely. So for starters, let's recommend to beta-testers that one first get a fresh copy of 4.43, even if one already is running 4.43. Here's what I get:

Issuing "Suspend" now works as desired, and as you describe above.

However, when I then choose "Run based on preferences," even after waiting a minute or so, the WU remains in "Paused" status and Activity Monitor confirms that it (and boinc) are still inactive. My cooling fan remains idle, too.

Thanks for the incremental progress, and I hope this is useful feedback.

Alan, 1. I can't reproduce

Alan,

1. I can't reproduce your problem either. However I am currently running a development Client (4.71) which might behave a bit differently. Anybody else seen this?

2. In any case this seems to be not a problem of the App, but of the Client.

3. It may also indicate a software or hardware problem on your machine. Which OS version are you running?

I've got a Dual 1.0 GHz G4,

I've got a Dual 1.0 GHz G4, BOINC Advanced GUI 4.43, and the 0.08 app. Nothing seems to be wrong aside from the "running" WU and the WU showing a gain in CPU time not always matching. I've seen this without the beta app, so I assume this is BOINC-related because a restart of BOINC fixes this.

And my completion times dropped from around 20+ hours to just over 9! I'm sure I get cursed at for the low credit claims on what BOINC benchmarks as a slow machine.
