Hi all.

Today didn't start off very well.  I had an appointment with the dietician and the nurse practitioner.  Car no worky.  Dead battery.

Sorry to hear about the car, Kathryn.  Frown  I hope you got it taken car of quickly.  I used to have an 89 Mustang LX 2.3 L, and it went through a battery and an alternator a year UNTIL I had an aftermarket electrical mechanic over-build the alternator to 120 Amps to correct Ford's under-designed electrical system.  Also, had to upgrade the cabling to the battery to 4 Gauge cables with gold plated connectors.  NEVER had a problem after that!  Surprised  Laughing  (...AND, NO, I did NOT have any amplifiers in the car; NOR anything else that would have put a strain on the system...  Just a POOR design by Ford!)

I'm a Honda man, now...  Honda's DON'T have these issues.  Smile

LOL.  It actually is a ford (Taurus to be specific).  Got the battery the same day and rescheduled my appointment.

And now I shall the winning,

Save

Be warned; there were several model years of the Taurus that were under investigation for a faulty transmission design.  A gear in the torque converter that links the differential at the rear of the car to the transmission at the front of the car was offset to the point that the torque converter gear would wear out gears in the automatic transmissions of the Taurus, Mustang, and I believe one other Ford vehicle.

My mustang actually went through two transmission rebuilds because of this issue; but, the car got totaled before I could have it addressed by Ford.  I got, (because of ALL my records that I had), from the insurance company $8,000.00 for a car that Blue Booked at the time for $2,300.00; all because of my tenacity and good record keeping, and debating skills against the insurance company.  Took that money and bought my 1989 Honda Accord LX-i.  Smile  Laughing

The Mustang was totaled in 1996...  News coverage of the transmission issues were just going on at that time.  If your Taurus is of the late 80's design; I'd look into Recall notices online to see if you have any recourse.  Ford tried hard to downplay this issue; so, you may have a fight on your hands if you cannot find Recall information.

Good luck.

I thought the Taurus was front wheel drive... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Taurus confirms it, up to 2007. So why would it have a rear differential?

Winning over lunch. Sweet and sour chicken with broccoli, and more broccoli on the side. A couple days ago, it was chicken pot pie with peas and carrots, and more peas on the side. I suspect federal regulations may be involved.

That's news to me; as long as I've been driving Fords, (1973 Cougar XR-7, and 1989 Mustang LX 2.3L), Ford was always rear wheel drive.  All I know is that the Taurus, Mustang, and Mercury Sable ALL had this weird transmission defect.  Maybe it was after the issue, that they went to front wheel drive...  IDK...  Like I said, weird...

[EDIT]

OK - I learned something...  Taurus and Sable WERE front wheel drive!  :-O  BUT, they still had a torque converter!  :-)

The transmission was AXOD and can be read about here:

AXOD Transmission.

About time to go to bed. I don't have to be at the museum early, but I don't want to be too late either. I'll be there very late tomorrow night.
