AMD Radeon RX 480 revealed: Polaris debuts in a £160/$200 card designed for VR

Details on the Polaris architecture—which is based on AMD's forth generation GCN architecture and a new 14nm FinFET manufacturing process—were thin on the ground during the RX 480's reveal at Computex 2016 in Taiwan, but the company did divulge a few key specs. The RX 480 will feature 36 compute units (CUs)—that's eight more than the R9 380, and just shy of the 40 of the R9 390—along with some fast GDDR5 memory attached to a 256-bit memory bus for 256GB/s of bandwidth.

The RX 480 will come in both 4GB and 8GB configurations (the former being the £160/$200 model), and will support AMD FreeSync and HDR video via its DisplayPort 1.3/1.4 and HDMI 2.0b outputs. Best of all, it has an average power draw of just 150W, which should make it cooler and quieter than AMD's previous-generation graphics cards.

I should get one soon (straight from AMD). Will test it immediately here, but not sure yet if I can publish some results until the NDA lifts :-(

I am really interested in

I am really interested in these. I hope they do well in E@H as I was planning on a new card or two to replace some of my older cards. $200 is a nice price point and was planning on spending almost twice that.

If the NDA mentions "Gary Roberts" as exception, then sure :-D

Yes, please. I am eager to see times and to know if this new generation can successfully run more than one unit at a time.

I see they are talking about

I see they are talking about 'compute units' now, how does that compare to the old standard of 'stream processors'?

RE: First off, the RX 480

Quote:
First off, the RX 480 will include 36 CUs. If we assume 64 stream processors to a CU – the GCN standard – then this brings us to 2304 SPs.

Test just below the chart.

This card has a lot of memory

This card has a lot of memory bandwidth for being so cheap, which bodes well for E@H. GPU utilization running only a single WU, as for the GCN 1.2 cards, doesn't look promising, though.

Do we know this to be still true with recent release of AMD GPU-PRO drivers? here

Well, that's only for linux

Well, that's only for linux and only mentions Vulkan, a 3D API which has nothing to do with OpenCL. I'd like to be surprised but don't expect any improvement from those.
