Topic 198622

My current Einstein, (and a POEM), are sitting doing nothing, been like that for a while now, deadline approaching. It's status is "GPU missing". The GPU is exactly the asme as it has been for months. I've stopped and started the system, but it seems to be quite solid. It insists the GPU is missing when it clearly is not.

GPU missing.

In looking at your system; the best I can figure is that maybe Win 10 "Updated" the ATI Video Driver. If it did, this could be the reason. Win Drivers are NOT full Drivers; check Win Update, View Installed Updates, and see if in its list is a "Newer" Video Driver. If yes, I'd go to ATI to obtain the latest Full Driver from them and install that. If given a choice during installation; choose "Install Clean"; this will remove the Win 10 Generic Driver and all remnants, and then install the Full ATI Driver.

Make sure to Exit BOINC before doing this, and then for good measure, reboot the computer following the Full Driver Install. Upon reboot back to the Desktop, the Full Driver should now be in effect. Check BOINC Event Log and see if GPU is "back"... Hope this helps.

Your system already has the latest driver installed.

The POEM work unit expires in the morning, getting kind of urgent now.

Somehow the Client reports:

Somehow the Client reports: "ATI device (or driver) doesn't support OpenCL" to the server. Maybe the driver crashed and now the client can't connect to the GPU anymore. Where those POEM tasks started after you got the "GPU missing" message for Einstein@home tasks. It seems strange that POEM is started but E@H not. Maybe a restart of the computer will help to clear the driver issue. Other than that you could try to reinstall the driver.

The Einstein work unit is

The Einstein work unit is 39.554% completed, and has been since it "stopped". I've lost the POEM now.

Reboot the pc when Windows 'loses' the driver the only way to get it back again is to reboot the whole pc. Yes the screen etc should still work but the driver that lets you crunch is 'lost' and won't work again until after a reboot.

And if that doesn't work, then remove the current (Microsoft) driver and replace it with the GPU manufacturer's - that's the GPU chipset manufacturer, AMD or NVidia - driver. Even if the version numbers are the same as you're running already.

I've tried rebooting,

I've tried rebooting, acheives nothing. The GPU driver, I tried to download a new driver, and AMD said what I had was correct already, the update procedure runs no further.

There should be two logfiles

There should be two logfiles in your BOINC Data directory named stderrgpudetect.txt and stdoutgpudetect.txt. Can you please check if there is something in those files and post the content if any?

There should also be a file there named "coproc_info.xml", I would really like to see the content of this too.

Could someone with a Windows system post the most likely directory names where those files can be found?

I see all three files in my working BOINC data directory - which I've manually relocated, so that doesn't help.

For Windows 7, the default location would be C:\ProgramData\BOINC, which is a hidden directory by default. Adrianxw is using Windows 10 - I don't think there was any deliberate change for Windows 10, but I can't be certain.
