Pop goes the weasel is an 1850 children's nursery rhyme including some cockney rhyming slang.
Up and down the city road,
In and out of the Eagle.
That’s the way the money goes,
Pop! goes the weasel.
The Eagle is a famous pub in Shepherdess Walk, London, close to City Road, and to pop something is to pawn it. Weasel and stoat is slang for coat. It refers to spending all your money in the pub then having to pawn your coat to make ends meet.
When I'm underground quietly minding my own business having a reflective gnaw on an invasive root in my path, I wouldn't expect it to blow me to smithereens either.
No.
Nor would I expect to make the news doing it. I remember when I was 16 and thinking from atop the protea bush I got flung into by an electrocuting lawnmower, that if I could live long enough to crawl somewhere less newsworthy, it would be nice.
Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.
No disrespect intended Annie, but aren't you one of those accident prone people ? You know, the epic legendary type that shames mere ineptitude or raw probability ? The sort that statistically soars around the neighborhood of seventeen plus standard deviations above the norm ? The variant that holidays in a village which then subsequently has consecutive once-in-a-century floods for each day of the entire week that you stayed, and that despite being hundreds of kilometers from any natural watercourse ? I'm just sayin' .... :-)
Cheers, Mike.
