There has been 10,000 people working on this
project .... who will be awarded the actual Nobel Prize
after today's big announcement ?

My Guess: A joint award going to both (Drum-roll) ...

A. Bernd Machenschalk and

B. Herr Bikeman !

Or .... how about giving it posthumously to Albert Einstein :-)

Who will be awarded the Nobel Prize ?

Kip S.Thorne is certainly a candidate.

I am old and suffering from

I am old and suffering from osteoarthritis in the neck. But today I am glad, because in 1969, working at Edizioni Scientifiche Mondadori in Milano, I had published a news in the Yearbook of Science and Technology on the attempts made by Joseph Weber at the University of Maryland to detect gravitational waves using a resonant mass detectors, that is a big cylinder of aluminium. Today both Kip Thorne and the Director of the National Science Foundation have remembered Joe Weber. Instead I was scolded by an eminent Italian nuclear physicist, who complained with my director. The principle of Weber's detector was similar to that employed today by the LIGO observatories: detect a similar phenomenon in two or three distant locations, so you are sure it is not simply noise. Today there are two LIGO observatories, a third in Italy, Virgo, is in an upgrade phase as is GEO600 in Germany, a fifth,Kagra in Japan is being built and another LIGO is planned in India. The more we have the more precision is possible in determining the position of the source. Hats off to the LIGO people!

Kip Thorne, Rainer Weiss and

Kip Thorne, Rainer Weiss and Ronald Drever.

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

And the answer is...

Nobody.

theregister.co.uk says that Drever is in a Scots nursing home. My brother in law, a theoretical physicist, is ill with SLA and is also recovered in a nursing home.
But Steven Hawking is still doing research and writing books. Maybe he should deserve a Nobel prize. I would vote for him.

Hmm...well, NEXT year when we have the results of this first run on the LIGO data, if we find something, maybe the project will get it. I suggest we raffle it off to E@H participants. Think of the money we could raise! Or we could divide it into shares. I, personally, would be quite happy with a certificate saying I am .000001 owner of the Nobel Prize.

According to the NYTimes Ron Drever just died. He won't get the Nobel prize he has amply deserved. RIP.

Pretty good guess !  Both Mike and Tullio were correct !

With the exception of missing Barry Barish.

American physicists Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics today for their leading roles in the discovery of “gravitational waves,” tiny ripples in space-
