Kip Thorne, Rainer Weiss and Ronald Drever.

Cheers, Mike.

Pretty good guess !  Both Mike and Tullio were correct !

With the exception of missing Barry Barish.

Bill

American physicists Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish shared the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics today for their leading roles in the discovery of “gravitational waves,” tiny ripples in space-

:)

As Rainer, Kip and Barry are probably a bit preoccupied with what to do with it - I'll just congratulate Tullio and Mike for the moment, and Bill... for noticing :)

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

There's a bit of back story on Misters Barish & Drever. Probably politest to say that Barry* had to pick up the ball in terms of obtaining/campaigning for the NSF funding after Mr Drever hadn't.

* What were his parents thinking ? Was he born in Alliteration City** or something ?  :-)

** That's the constructed capital of a county out in the country. Great oil paintings and a low crime rate. Full of constables. :~)

Cheers, Hugh.

( edit ) Hi Annie ! I'm just back for a few weeks of impromptu, though actual, work before firing up the East coast of Orstralia to FNQ.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Surprised patients are easier to manage I think. Yes ;-)

On another topic, could the alliteration have helped with the funding? If you examine the difference between:

"Ronald Drever called" and;

"Barry Barish called"

...and then imagine that being repeated at you over a period of time...

... which one is easier to overlook?

Ron Drever has another

Ron Drever has another important LIGO connection, that being the Pound-Drever-Hall technique of locking the interferometer lasers to the resonant arm cavities ( and vice versa ).

Cheers, Mike.

Indeed. This could be the key to a new style of primary care medicine. I could leap out from behind a curtain and say "Ta Da ! You've got tonsillitis!". Or sneak my head around a corner and say in a sing-song voice "I know who's got appendicitis". Follow that up by hiding in the roof cavity and sliding back the access hatch to pop my head down & say "Psychotic break anyone ?". Not to mention being camouflaged within the large potted fern at the entrance and whisper as the patients go by "halitosis", "acne", "umbilical hernia" and the good old reliable : "it's just a virus".

It's when people say things like that I realise my hopes for getting a Nobel Prize in physics are not as achievable as I like to think.

Fortunately, that feeling passes quite quickly :)
