My drone has three flying modes. One of them uses GPS for navigation, and in that mode it knows where it's not allowed to go (airports and other things) and won't go there. It will even keep itself 15' below the flight path approaching airports.
In other news, I saw Star Wars today. Very good. I don't think it will be a spoiler if I mention how odd it is that there's no 20th Century Fox fanfare at the beginning. No THX "vwoom" chord either.
But; if you stayed through the entire ending credits, you'd have seen "Rerecorded at 20th Century Studios".... :-)
TL
I did stay through the entire credits, but I didn't see that. I was rather shocked to see "Shot on Kodak film." Others tell me I'm wrong about the "vwoom." Maybe the theater where I saw it doesn't have THX sound.
[edit]
I went back to the drone registration page first thing this morning. It's not up and running yet. The words "Register My UAS" that look like they should be a link aren't.
NO THX at my IMAX Theater, then; because - NO THX Sound hit us, just the standard IMAX visual and audio effects before the movie starts.

Me either!! I dislike stories that start in the middle and then have to have new episodes to show what happened before what you just watched? Maybe it's just the way I think but I like stories that have a nice processional sequence to them. Sure an occasional back story is okay, but don't start in the middle and work towards each end if you want me to follow along with you.
Did anyone see the downhill skiing event yesterday? A drone being used by a news organization (I believe) fell out of the sky and narrowly missed a skier. The thing was enormous. Had it hit the guy it would have been nasty. Don't know what happened to cause it.

No I did not see it, but I do know that Lockheed Martin came out with a 'ray gun' thingy, looks like a very fat shotgun, that supposedly can take down drones. They are talking about putting them around airports, military bases and other 'sensitive' places to keep drones out. Right now it is ONLY hand held though so that would mean they have to not only see it but then aim a shoulder weapon at it. LM said that they hope to mount and automate the thing for the fixed places like airports etc.
Right now though the problem is they fly as low as birds and can even be as straight and narrow or as wildy erratic as birds fly, so using radar to pick a drone out of a crowd of flying objects isn't easy. I wonder if that's what the FAA's mandatory registration sticker helps do? And if so how does that help them find non registered ones?
As for the skiing failure it could be a simple battery problem, we have all seen batteries not last as long in the cold as they do in the warmer weather areas.
