Now just don't forget to register it with the FAA by December 21st or they could confiscate it. I guessing it's alot like the old CB radio registration, they gather a bunch of numbers and info on you and then file it away some place, just 'in case' your drone ever flies over something it shouldn't and they then want to find you. In Wash DC there have been several flying over fences and into Government airspace creating some security scares, so far each was determined to be an 'accident' in that the person did not intend any harm, they were just curious. The drone folks told the security guys 'it was never out of my sight and I can see the same things standing right here' when they were caught. They gyro-copter guy was different and his case isn't over yet.
Actually, registration STARTS on Dec. 21 and must be done within 60 days. For the first 30 days, they will credit back the $5 fee. However, the registration must be renewed every three years for another $5. The registration number must be clearly marked on the aircraft, but does not need to be readily visible like on a full size aircraft (or a boat). It can be inside the battery compartment, for example, as long as it can be accessed without use of tools to disassemble it. You can put the same registration number on multiple aircraft. You must have the printed form with you when flying. There are major civil and criminal fines and even jail time for failure to comply.
It seems to know in its programming at least some of the places it's not allowed to go. At 385', it started beeping at me that it was at maximum altitude (which is 400'). I should review the rules, though.
My father did have an actual CB license, before they dropped the requirement.

Turn a negative into a positive. About a year ago a 16 year old fired up his laptop, and usurped control of a drone. The original owner just watched his drone fly away. Now if it were an Amazon drone delivering a new shiny Jaguar .... :>)
I think these drones should be banned, full stop finish. They simply cause to much trouble.
And they have already saved hundreds of thousands of both money and man hours!! Farmers are using them to keep an eye on their crops, researchers are using them to find interesting areas to research that otherwise could take days to hack thru the jungle to find 'there is nothing there'. Some farmers are even using them to herd their cows, seems the noise isn't something they particularly understand so move away from. There are MANY other things too, the cops are using them to keep an eye on crowds from above to monitor problems or even the need for more porta pottys etc.
Drones can be used for both good and bad, just like when Einstein, and others, had their dilemma about building The Bomb. Sure bad people use drones to spy on their neighbors, sure terrorists use them to know exactly when to set off their explosives, but lots of good is coming from their use too. Like most things they are a 2 edged sword, some will use them for good, while others will use them for bad stuff, much like computers. Without computers identity theft wouldn't be the problem it is, but then neither would credit cards or the ability to crunch for the Boinc projects we do.

In terms of military surveillance and applications they are invaluable and can and do save lives, there is no two ways about that. I can also see applications in law and order and policing. In remote areas like the Canadian Prairies I can see the sense in farmers etc using them.
What I am against which I didn't make properly clear is the general public having access to them, particularly in built up areas. How long will it be before one hits a landing aircraft, or one drops on a kiddies head etc. Councils could use them for checking on unauthorised building extensions, but Google maps does that already. I think they should be authorised with special licences.
The case of our friend that wants to use one to take pictures of museum trains is a borderline case. It is a private site that has access from the public, and whilst the person in question would be classed as a responsible user, it brings other issues into it.
Amazon using them to deliver goods is nonsensical. Where wil they drop the package, front garden, back garden. How will they announce delivery by email? Supposing it is pouring with rain and they are out all day, the goods could be ruined, always assuming of course that nobody nips over the fence and steals it anyway. If they get licenced to use them, it will be ridiculous.
