Okay, sorry, when I said 17 didn't match, my fatigued and confuddled brain was thinking you said it had the same correct letter as 3, 5, 8, and 15. But you didn't say that, so there's no conflict.
I think we have firmly set O as the 9th letter and I as the 15th.

Okay, I seem have made an incorrect assumption somewhere.
1. 3, 5, 8, 15 all have the O correct.
Therefore, according to the above quote,
2. the group in 18 must include the O in 9th position.
However, expanding on Mike's chart, I have eliminated N from 6th and the other O from 7th, meaning the correct cluster must be TOPI or OPIE. Which is a problem because
3. I is 15th, so it can't be 11th.
I really do need to do at least a little legitimate work today, you know.

and also ignoring 10 for the moment, the only common letter between 6, 7, and 17 is the O in 7th position. Mike's chart showed that eliminated, so he must have been wrong. I'm putting it in my chart as correct.
Now, going back to the grouping of four letters, it must be either NOTO or OTOP.

Back to 10. The only letter it has in common with 17 is the E 4th.

Okay, the correct letter in 3 (among others) is the O 9th, so A is not first. Take that out of the chart.
Now there are only two places left where A hasn't been eliminated. One of those is 16th, confirming that suspicion (and that it's not -PHRENIC). The other is 6th.
___E_AO_OPHRENIA
Taking another look, 2 eliminates S as 1st.
Now we have another problem. C and R can't immediately precede D, S, or T, especially when the 3rd letter is C, D, R, or S. (I'm allowing for the moment that the A and O go together because I know the British spell some words that way.)

and also ignoring 10 for the moment, the only common letter between 6, 7, and 17 is the O in 7th position. Mike's chart showed that eliminated, so he must have been wrong. I'm putting it in my chart as correct.
Now, going back to the grouping of four letters, it must be either NOTO or OTOP.
This gives me ______O_O_____I_
Back to 10. The only letter it has in common with 17 is the E 4th.
Now I have ___E__O_O_____I_
The only letter in common there is the R at 12th.
___E__O_O__R__I_
It's established from the previous paragraph that the correct letter in 4 is the E 12th. The 11th letter in 11 is H. That goes in the chart.
And if I parse "followed by all the correct letters in 16" to mean those letters are 13-15th, they are ENI. Put those in the chart.
___E__O_O_HRENI_
Hmm. The last part of the word is starting to look suspiciously like -ophrenia.
I need to post this and then review.
