I HATE it when UPS hands it off to the local USPS for delivery, they save money but it takes MUCH longer to get the product. My old UPS driver told me UPS charges x amount for shipping and then puts it on the plane with everything else, then pays the USPS a tiny fraction of that x amount for the USPS to go the final few miles. Both make money but we the customer lose out waiting for our product. On the UPS website it should said 'handed off for local delivery' or something like that, that means the USPS is bringing it to your mailbox. My personal experience has been that about 7 days after the USPS gets it that I get it, I guess it's treated like a magazine, someday is okay.

They're never that slow for me.

Perhaps the difference is that I live in a city of ~150,000.

I live in a 'neighborhood' of 3500 homes with a 110 acre man-made lake at the center of it. I am about 25 miles South of Washington DC and the post office that serves me is about 10 minutes away, but serves well over 300k people. The key could be that I am on a 'rural route', meaning I have a mailbox on the curb that the mailman must have drive-up access too or I get no mail.

What kind of mail delivery you have here depends on how old your neighborhood is. The town was settled in 1831. My part of it had a few houses as early as the late 1930s, but was mostly built out in the 1950s-70s (and is now being re-built out with small houses being torn down and huge new ones built on the same tiny lots). We have mailboxes right by our front doors and the carrier has to walk with a bag around her neck.

Areas that were originally subdivided in the 1970s-90s have curbside mailboxes for drive-up delivery.

Later than that, there are mailbox clusters, which is basically the same thing as what you find in an apartment building lobby, only it's in a box standing on a pedestal out by a curb somewhere, every block or so.

Last year, I had a package coming via UPS handoff, which arrived at my PO on a Friday. I really wanted to have it to use on Saturday (Saturday delivery would be too late), so I called the PO and asked if I could pick it up. After only minimal resistance, they found it for me and said I could come and get it. They did require me to show ID.

At work, I buy a lot of DVDs on amazon, many of which are handed off from UPS to USPS. Usually, if they arrive at the PO by 7am, they will be sorted and delivered the same morning. (It irks me, however, that they even try to deliver on Saturdays. We're a school, so we're clearly closed on Saturday, and my amazon account is set to not deliver on weekends, but they try it anyway.) This Monday, I got 8 packages in the mail (2 of which they'd tried to deliver on Saturday) and 2 from the UPS truck.

Speaking of which, I need to get busy cataloging one of those DVDs. "Rick Steves' Iran."

Since I have had the same P.O. box since 1979 I have seen several of them retire and they all know me since I paid bills with postal money orders for about 30 years.

I had a few packages delivered there for free from a company but they were supposed to get a signature but instead she just said she didn't need me to sign (she just retired a few days ago) and as she handed it to me she said "what is this a box of lead?"

I just said as I walked out the door "no it is silver"

I didn't say how much though (100 ounces)

Another time she just handed one to a person who I had picking up my mail and only asked for her signature..........good thing it was actually somebody I could trust since that was a box of silver coins.

Here where I live there is many more people than when I moved here in 1971 but lots of the bigger pieces of property are owned by families that have been here since the 1800's but some of the families are shrinking here.

I remember my P.O. box was in the original one.........small old wooden building and the boxes had a combination to open them instead of keys like they have now.

Now we have 3 post offices within 15 miles and the big one is about 20 miles in the main town in the county.

Not lots of people but we are all spread out with these old tiny towns and then farm lands and then a big resort community (on the Olympic Peninsula)

The main thing is in the future I am going to make sure the computer parts I order will go to the right place which probably means bigger order via UPS and small things like the Ram sticks to my P.O. box

Hi Magic, How about my tale

Hi Magic,
How about my tale of woe:-/
purchased a GTX980 from Amazon UK, 2 working day delivery.. £448 98

But bank holliday weekend the next day:-(

So I get email saying deliver will be Wednesday.. in all day NO SHOW!!!
got onto AUK was told they tried but I wasn't in, blew top, mega rant about Amazon Logistics employing idiots etc. Was promised delivery Thursday after 12pm. Damm thing arrived at 17:00 hours, not a happy bunny, been awake for over 24 hrs when it showed up then had to reconfigure both my rigs..

So boot up, no internet access:-( Shut router down and wait 3 mins then power up.
Windows screen display out of kilter, had to reinstall NV drivers:-( Bah Humbug, already has 1 GTX980 installed, bleeding M$ OS coudnt hack a 2nd one without driver re-install.

Same for rig 2.. which got the GTX970 from rig 1:-)

Just once I'd like something to go whithout ANY problems..

Cheers,

Cliff,

Been there, Done that, Still no damm T Shirt.

NICE to hear.......that I am not the only one that these things happen to Cliff

In a perfect world there would be a store with anything we would ever want to buy within 5 miles of where we live that are all guaranteed to work.

And with these GeForce cards I already plan on the long download and install of new drivers on my slow as a snail DSL.....after doing it many, many times I find a tv show to watch so I don't just sit there staring at the pc monitor waiting for it to be finished and tested to make sure it is working so I can load it with Einstein GPU's

I have a Maplins within 800 meters, trouble is they charge about £50 more for the kit:-(

What kinda DSL is so slow? I have 100mbit feed, but it runs at 107mbit..down that is, its a lot slower on the up rate.

Funny that Mobo manufacturers can provide a dvd with drivers etc for kit that costs a LOT less than modern GPU's but the GPUmanufacturers don't provide driver dvd's.. Bleeding rip off merchants:-(

Good morning Cliff (2am here)

Yes that is why I rather order online when I need parts for the computers (or cars for that matter)

No stores close to where I live, especially with pc parts I ever want at the best price (so I always use TigerDirect or NewEgg)

Since I live in a place called the Olympic Peninsula when I look out my window I only see trees and the stores are a 50 mile round trip.........even my post office box is 15 mile round trip.

So in the area if you live a few miles away where the resort is you can get cable or the faster DSL but where I live it was a dialup for my first 7 years then I tried a satellite ISP and it was nothing but slow trouble.

Finally in 2007 we had all the neighbors in this area sign a request to a local phone company to run the DSL here and at first it seemed great.

Lately it makes videos slow to d/l and watch and here in the Boinc Universe it is ok sending and receiving Einstein GPU tasks but when it comes to uploading Atlas tasks it can take an hour for each one and the d/l is not much better.

And the same for d/ling things like update of Virtualbox or GeForce drivers so I try to run older ones until I have to update.

Most of the time it will be running like a 24k dialup doing that.

And the GeForce drivers change so often it could be because everyone else is trying to d/l at the same time.

And along with the slow d/l of the card drivers or Boinc I at times will end up losing some tasks that are close to be finished........not that big of a deal with a GPU task but it is with the 24 hour vLHC's or CMS-devs and the Atlas tasks.

Ok I better go see if I can get some sleep so I can get up before noon since I have plenty to do around here.

.............goodnight!
