RE: The Royal Mail began in

The Royal Mail began in 1516, when Henry VIII established a "Master of the Posts", renamed "Postmaster General" in 1710. In 1653 Parliament set aside all previous grants for postal services, and contracts were let for the inland and foreign mails to John Manley, which was effectively enforced by Protector Oliver Cromwell's government. At the restoration of the monarchy, in 1660, all that passed into oblivion and the General Post Office (GPO) was officially established by Charles II in 1660.

Ah you see it's all this monarchy business and the restoration that caused such unrest. If we had stuck with Ollie and hill top beacons like we had in 1588, we'd have had no trouble. And if Thomas Farriner hadn't been trying out one of Miggins new recipes, his bakery might still be there.

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

:)))))))))))) Thanks Zalster :) glad it's not just my... *turn pointedly to look at furries* ... HOOLIGANS!! that do these things.

I've actually got my guys and girls a little confused this year - left the tree in its box and just propped it up against the wall :) It wasn't deliberate - it's missing two feet... somewhere... *scratch head in mystified manner* Hope I find them before Christmas or it's not going to be much of a challenge to my tearaways at all...

See you're sticking to the official story line... :)

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

Well actually, *glances around covertly for earwiggers*, when Edward LLoyd was 18 and planning his coffee shop, he and some ship owning cronies rebelled at the cost of a letter and experimented with using their clay pipes to send messages like the Red Indians did with their fires. Unfortunately the Post Office Union got to hear about it and took action, there was a scuffle on the picket line, and the rest is history.

The Government hushed it up and blamed the local baker. As Edward Hyde was heard to say, we can't let the Unions run the country, whatever next!

But that real story is on a need to know basis, shhhh!

A watch may be broken and only correct twice a day

Ah, but IS it!!! One trillionth of a second before where it has stopped it is fast, one trillionth of a second after where it has stopped it is slow. Doesn't matter how accurately it's measured, it goes instantly from fast to slow so in theory it's never right. It's similar to Aristotle's Dichotomy or Zeno's Paradox.

Then we have the question of whether a piston in a running engine is ever stationary at any point in it's stroke. Some say that if there is any slack in the Big end or Gudgeon pin bearings then in theory yes. Others say assuming zero slack then no, as the piston will change direction instantly from up to down or vice versa.

Oooer, more beer !!!

Ok, good news and some not so

Ok, good news and some not so good news regarding AnnieT.

There was an unfortunate accident in the kitchen over Christmas and Annie suffered a number of 2nd and 3rd degree burns and was in hospital for a while. She is now home on strong meds. Her family are rallying round, and she wanted me to pass on her kindest regards to you all, and to reassure you that she is basically OK.

I'll pass on any further news that I get, and I'll see about a card.

Get well soon Annie :-)))
