Please use this thread to discuss the newly released Android application of the Einstein@Home search for radio pulsars in data from the Arecibo Observatory.

To get the application running on your Android device go to the Google Play Store, download the BOINC app, and choose Einstein@Home from the list of available projects.

To preserve battery life, minimize recharge time, and avoid the use of allotted data on cellphone plans, smartphones and tablets running BOINC will only perform calculations when they are being charged, when the battery life is above 90%, and when they are connected to wireless local area networks (WiFi). You can also modify this in the preferences tab of the app.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Android app release: feedback thread

Hello,

Installing on the HTC Wildfire S was easy. I´ve added einstein@home, seti@home and WCG. It seems to me that none of the projects got for my mobile...
I shows me the message "Nothing to do, waiting for tasks..."

Maybe i get some work over night. I am curious the see how that works.

By default, tasks are downloaded (and results uploaded) only via a WiFi connection, not via GSM or 3G data networks. You can configure this on the "Preferences" tab of the Android App. Checking the expert feature will give you more advanced options to configure.

Ah, it's this:

Quote:

2013-07-22 18:14:55.2980 [PID=14221] [debug] [HOST#8218515] MSG(high) Binary Radio Pulsar Search (Arecibo) needs 247.96 MB RAM but only 209.15 MB is available for use.

Maybe we can lower this somewhat. The actual RAM Consumption should be somewhat lower.

How about battery

How about battery consumption? Does the app affect phone standby time?

Great thing, I was waiting

Great thing, I was waiting for this. Now my Sony Xperia Z could crunch like the big ones!

I installed the app. It seems

I installed the app. It seems that the default is to crunch numbers only when the phone is connected to a charger and is at least 90% charged. There is an option to compute when on battery, but for now I think I'll leave that off.

Indeed, by default, BOINC on Android will only run the science apps when the device is connected to a power supply.

And yes you can override this and configure BOINC to run apps also on batteries (actually, this feature is not new, it existed for some time now to prevent rapid drain of batteries on notebooks).
