My Windows XP machine stops for almost exactly 1 hour after completing a work unit before starting the next. Is there any way to make it start the next unit immediately?
I'm using BOINC 4.79. I'm not doing any other BOINC project. I have two windows PCs, both setup as "Work", and they are allowed to do work from 20:00 to 08:00. My Windows 2000 PC seems to run throught this process (though it's much slower at processing WUs).
A sample from the messages viewed in the BOINC manager:
11/05/05 00:04:58|Einstein@Home|Throughput 1451 bytes/sec
11/05/05 01:04:55|Einstein@Home|Starting result H1_0273.0__0273.0_0.1_T04_Fin1_2 using einstein version 4.79
11/05/05 08:00:00||Suspending computation and network activity - time of day

I think the 4.79 you speak of might be the Einstein app, the BOINC CC would be the version of the core client, i.e. 4.25(stable) 4.3x(development version).
But anyway, go to your account info and then general preferences. What does this field show for you: "Do work only between the hours of"?
What BOINC VERSION 4.19 4.35 4.25 etc.....
With a little work you can check that yourself, you know, Tim? ;)
Tabanus is using CC4.25 for his WinXP and Win2k PCs and 4.19 for his Linux PC.
I'm just wondering what else he might be running on that PC between the hours of 8pm and 8am and what the setting is for "Switch between applications every x minutes" in the General Preferences. If 60, try to set it to zero (0) and then update E@H manually through BOINC.
Do work while computer is running on batteries?

Skip image file verification?
Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example).
Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC. no

I see that it says switch between applications every 60 minutes, as recommended. This is the same for my Windows 2000 PC which appears not to halt for an hour between WUs, and yes, the BOINC manager says version 4.25

Ahem... Tabanus wrote earlier: " I have two windows PCs, both setup as "Work", and they are allowed to do work from 20:00 to 08:00." .. so that works perfectly and shouldn't be changed.
Really Tabanus, what if you play with the switch between applications option? I assume you only run Einstein on that PC, so it shouldn't matter much then. Try for a setting of 1 minute, see what that does. See if it then runs the application for a long time (duration of the workunit) and switches down for a minute. But do manually update the project after you saved the preferences on the page.

Sounds like something in your general preferences. Need more info though, BOINC CC version and are you doing any other projects on this machine?

Change that to nothing and your problem should be solved. Be sure to manually update your client so that it gets the new preferences.

Yes...I can only run Einstein

Yes...I can only run Einstein when we're closed overnight.
I'll try setting the option to switch between applications to 1 minute, and report back tomorrow if it had any effect.
Thanks
That's done it! BOINC now
)
That's done it! BOINC now stops calculating for only 1 minute instead of 1 hour after completing a WU.
Thanks again
