The Tasks tab shows the currently executing task making progress even though the status column says the task is suspended due to the computer being in use. It appears that when the task completes that another task does not start while the computation is suspended. While the task is "making progress while suspended" graphics rendering becomes very jerky.

BRP4SSE (CPU, BRP4OpenCL (GPU), 6LV1.13 (CPU), or the Gamma Ray application?
Are you sure that it's not work done on the GPU and that you have set to run the GPU always (either in the Activity menu, or the local preferences)?

My preferences have both CPU and GPU suspended when the computer is in use. The activity menue says to run both CPU and GPU (and network) based on preferences. The Computing allowed preference boxes for CPU and GPU are not checked.
The image name in the task manager is "einsteinbinary_BRP4_1.28_windows_x86__opencl-ati.exe".
The BOINC Manager shows Name column: "p2030.20110218.G176.80-03.53.N.b0s0g0.00000_304_0"; and Status column: Suspended - computer is in use (0.5 CPUs + 1 ATI GPU). The progress column is counting.

2 Things.
1. Where did you set this? In the Online Preferences, or the Local Preferences?
The Local Preferences override the Online Preferences, so if this is set in the online preferences, make sure you didn't set local prefs.
2. Is Boinctray.exe running? Check that in the Windows Task Manager window, Processes tab. Boinctray is the BOINC idle detection program.

I'm not sure about question 1.
I made this setting in the Activity menu dropdown on the page "World Community Grid - BOINC Manager", which I assume is the "local preferences" to which you refer. It is also set in the "Computing Preferences" section of "My Account", which I assume is the "Online Preferences".
Boinctray.exe is running.
I am running an HP Envy notebook with Windows 7 and all appropriate updates.
The graphics adapter is a Radeon HD 7690M XT.

It may be a bug in the BRP application, although I don't see that behaviour and mine is suspended - time of day for 14 hours a day. Then again, I also have my computer go into hibernation after so many minutes of no activity.
Anyway, I asked the developers of the app to come check this thread. Perhaps that they know what might cause it. Sorry I couldn't be of help.

Can you have a look at the Windows task manager to see whether the application is indeed running when the BOINC manager reports it as being suspended? What's its CPU consumption?
Also, what's your preference on leaving suspended applications in memory (see memory preferences)? What's the version of the BOINC client you're running?

I am seeing this same behavior under Linux.
The task window shows the BRP tasks are suspended but the elapsed time is still counting up and the gnome-system-monitor and top show the tasks are still running.
It is consuming enough resources to interfere with development tasks. It goes on quite a while, I haven't seen it stop by itself.
The only way to suspend these jobs seems to be to exit boinc, which is not so bad if I remember to restart it when I'm done. Setting the Activity to "Suspend GPU" has no effect either, on running tasks that it. The suspend state (in use or from Activity menu) does keep new tasks from starting.

Which BOINC client do you use?
Are we talking about the CPU or GPU version? The CPU tasks should run with nice level 19 (min. prio) and hence not "interfere" with your work in any way. If it does, all BOINC apps should be showing that behaviour.

I'm running under Scientific Linux 6.3 with the LDG client packages installed so I had to compile the boinc package myself to get boincmgr to work. I don't remember which package versions conflict with the rpm version. This may be my mistake. It reports: 7.0.31.
I've only seen this behavior with GPU tasks, specifically BRPS Acebio 1.28 (brp4cuda32nv270). The CPU jobs (mainly S6 line veto lately) seem to be comfortably in the sleeping state using 0% of CPU. I don't seem to have any tools that report GPU load.
The system is I7-2700K with hyperthreading, each BRP claims 25% of a cpu (based on gnome-system-monitor). I am running 2 at a time, which may be relevant.
It's not clear to me whether I'm seeing CPU load or just Display Lag but NetBeans and Matlab both show significantly degraded response time unless I shut down boinc. Just to be clear boincmgr shows these jobs in the suspended state with elapsed time ticking away.
I'm more than happy to experiment if that helps at all.
