Why can I not get past 219, and you can?

Memory perhaps? I'm using PC3200 and you quote 2700.

The other thing is Vcore. There are two options in the BIOS, +3% and +6%. Are you using one of those or just the default value?

Another point to remember is that these boards are cheap and don't have features like PCI/AGP locking. So at 219, the PCI bus will be quite out of spec. Because of the way the dividers work, PCI/AGP will be in spec when the FSB is at 167, 200, 233, etc. So if you can get your CPU to handle 233 (ie using Vcore and better cooling) anything running on PCI/AGP busses will be a lot safer than at 219. Speeds between 230-236 should be close enough to spec. The one I have running at 231 will run at 238 but it needs a bit better cooling so I just back it off a bit. It's accumulated 13,660 cobblestones with more pending and so far there has not been a single validation failure that I'm aware of.

Cheers,
Gary.

yeah it`s the memory. 438.6

yeah it`s the memory. 438.6 Mhz right now.. @ 1966Mhz..

I checked my cooler yesterday, and to my amazement, I had placed the cooler upsidedown all this time..

I was running 60 deg at 1710Mhz, so I suspected something was off.. how I ever managed to faul this up .. it had only 2 mm wide contact with the coolingblock..

It froze up on me all the time and now I know why.. Now it runs for 36Hrs running boinc at 1966mhz and 44deg constant, perfectly stable..

I go get me some 3200 Overclock memory.. see how that goes..

i bought a pentium II 400

i bought a pentium II 400 when it was the hottest and fastest thing...
100mhz memory and a DVD player!!!!
its now the hub of one of my farms...
next was a amd k6-2+ 550mhz....truly terrible seti@home performance...
its also now a hub of one of my farms...
then amd turned itself around with the first athlons...
the slot A athlons...mhz for mhz just as good as the P3's
imho...got two of those 700mhz and 800mhz...

i can tell you for absolute fact that although a P4 2.66 has a higher
ghz than a 2400XP @1.930ghz...the 2400xp is its equal in Einstein, Seti@home
and any other program i run...

all this talk of obsolescense makes me wonder...
i use microsoft office 97...not the newest MS offerings..it does everything i
need it to do...
i can play any old or new game i want to...
even on the p2 400....
all of my puters run XP or ME....the p2 400 actually handles xp quite well..
i'd rather spend my money on AMD chips...i get better performance and alot less
heat generation...

i agree about the Pentium M (centrino} chip...i have the 715 Dothan core..
@1.5 ghz...amazing cpu...too bad that Intel doesn't develop it more...
actually thinking of building a system using the new 855 chipset boards...
with the new 2.1 pentium M....the chip goes for around $700us and the boards
$200-300us...but zoooooom the speed...
then i come back to earth and think about how many duron 1800 systems i could throw together for the sam amount of money with a much higher output of workunits.....
ahhhhh thanks AMD for helping me make sensible decisions...

Have you tried to play Half Life 2 or Doom 3 on it?

From what I can tell Intel is developing the Pentium M into a better perfroming desktop chip. I may be wrong but I think the code name is Cedar Mill. The 855GME has more than shown it age with AGP 4X. And the ones that are available were for not really made for public use. Although the 915 chipset for the Pentium M are now starting to hit the market. One thing that really interest me is the socket 478 to socket 479 adapter from Asus. A pentium M overclocked to over 3GHz set a world record for 1M SuperPI, which belonged to AMD before.

Just for the record I have my AMD 2600+ Mobile overclocked to 2650Mhz and I have a P4 Northwood running at 2800Mhz. My AMD does a workunit in under 5 hours and the P4 takes almost 8. Those new Intel chips are looking pretty hot though. Dothan/Pentium M

"Have you tried to play Half Life 2 or Doom 3 on it?"

No, but i could on any other machine i own.
being obsolete is subjective...i can use the p2 400 for word processing,
email, surfing or any number of things while letting my faster machines
crunch...
in fact am i typing this on a p2 400 or an overclocked XP-Mobile machine?
every computer can have a use.
matter of fact the Mersenne Prime Number project uses the Pentium (1) 90mhz
as the basis for calculation operations...

i mean if gaming is all you are after, yeah spend a mint on the newest graphics card....

The last three systems I've

Message 11081 in response to message 11080

The last three systems I've put together utilize the 64 bit Athlon 754 processor.

I have found them to be quite cost effective - this week's model started from Fry's with an ECS 755A2 motherboard (which is a surprising good board for performance and function) and the 3200 CPU, retail version for a total of $190.

While I have not been a fan of retail fans (either from AMD or Intel), in this case the fan is a large and quiet fan which is quite effective (unlike the 32 bit AMD XP's the 64bit design appears to run quite a bit cooler).

I matched this pair up with a decent Samsung IDE hard drive (though I could have used a SATA drive with the ECS motherboard), plus GeForce MX4000 (this is not a gamer configuration), and 512M of PC3200 memory, along with a Thermaltake dual fan 480W power supply.

Not a super expensive combination, but it performs very well, is quite quiet, and with the low temperature operation of the CPU, I expect it to be quite reliable.

i have been keeping track of

i have been keeping track of the times relating to various processors..
some of this may be interesting to you...

Duron 1.8 24,379 minutes $48USD
Pentium 4 3.4 37,109 minutes $277USD
AMD64 3000 24,251 minutes $146USD
Pentium M 1.6 36,821 minutes $215USD

one chip is a huge bargain if you are building crunching farms...
thats right.. the lowly Duron with 128kb L1 cache and 64kb L2 cache...

now this is info i'm collecting from my own credits granted...
thats why i'm not listing times for a AMD64 3800 or a FX-55 or the
top of the line Intel.
just an average cross section

so if all you are interested in is crunching...
the Duron will do 1.5X more crunching in the same time as
a P4 3.4 or a P-M Dothan 1.6 and receive a higher credit usually.

just some beans i counted.

I have noticed the same thing

I have noticed the same thing over time. My little Duron 1.2 is not really that far behind my XP 3000+. Granted the 3000+ gets more use it does have significant idle time to crunch. Anybody have any idea why the Duron chip would seem so much faster given the same clock speed? Would it be the smaller cache? That defies all sensible logic. Any ideas?
