and understandably so.

In my opinion it would be less worrying to necomers if the machine info were divided into 'publishable info (optionally reeased to others)' and 'private info (always hidden to others)'. Private info would be marked as 'always hidden to everyone except you'. Within the 'publishable info' field would be the option to hide or reveal the publishable info.

Until/unless that happens we can expect that many users will choose to keep their info private simply through not having the time to read up on the exact effects of the current options

...or at the least a BIG RED (* saying what info is always hidden to others).

But after seeing how few replys are here I get the feeling that hardly any of the almost 38,000 users even bother reading anything. Read my profile, it pretty much says it all.

That would save a lot of confusion to new users, and it would be easy to implement.

When I joined my first boinc

When I joined my first boinc project I chose to have my computers visible. Then I attached the first computer, and took a peak at it. "Great", I thought, "the name of it is visible". Then I noticed the "Show IP"-link and clicked on it. The internal IP was displayed. Well, that didn't matter to me, as thousends of pc's outthere would have the same internal IP. I had no idea that those two things weren't visible to others, until I took a peak at other's.

Since, I've been wondering my self about this hidding thing - and I thought some people didn't want othes to know just how many hosts they had running boinc. I never even got the idea that it could be something like hidding company names - I asume people are following the rules and not run boinc on other computers than they are allowed to..
