I've returned from my travels

I've returned from my travels through Korea. I went to the UN Cemetery and the Seoul National Cemetery. Both beautiful, haunting places. The aquariums in Busan and Seoul were cool too. I hope I'll get pictures up soon.

I had to get my desktop fixed today. Yesterday, I went to plug in my USB drive and I heard a pop and smelled something bad. Uh oh. I let the magic smoke out of the power supply. Luckily it's under warranty. So next week, I'll take it back in and they'll switch out the loaner power supply with mine. Apparently they can put some more magic smoke in it. And we all know it's the magic smoke that makes it work.

Caloric - though properly known as Phlogiston. Your machine is lacking Phlogiston ..... :-)

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) or is it Negative Phlogiston that you need? :-)

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Interesting you should use the term flashback.

.... I was quite dangerous back then. Add magnesium metal to hydrochloric acid. Shake. This gives you magnesium chloride, a safe salt.

Plus hydrogen gas. In the hands of a teenager standing next to a bunsen burner. Unsafe.

Place open end of test tube ( containing the above mix ) near the flame : it flashes back into the tube - making a nice loud 'ploop' sound at least, or blowing out the backside of the test tube at best.

I was the sort of nerd that scared the girls just to get their attention. Which I did.

I could never quite get over the impression that the teacher passed me simply because he didn't want me to repeat ....

Cheers, Mike.

Like Mike I played with chemicals at school.

I started with 0.88 fort ammonia and Iodine crystals to make nitrogen triiodide. When dry it went crack and left brown stains everywhere.

I soon graduated to using ice packed around glass phials of glycerine to which I carefully added 99% water white nitric acid. That was fun when the resultant brown thick liquid was washed and carefully placed. Then stones were thrown at the container.

For fishing I used to use micronised sodium chlorate and sugar, intimately mixed and ignited under water with sodium metal.
When I grew up I graduated to the manufacture of 3,500 tonnes of TNT, 5,000 tonnes of RDX and 4,500 tonnes of HMX per year.

Shucks. Never did that ....... :-(

Ah, sodium metal. Food of the gods.
Keep in a jar of oil. Slice off a piece and chuck it on some water surface. Zips around like a little speedboat. Potassium metal if you like a different flame color. Purple?

You grew up?? I never did. :-)

{ Walk down the centre hallway of the school building, surreptitiously holding an open test tube of bubbling hydrogen sulphide. Yeah, I was really into making friends. Mind you I wasn't as dumb as one lad who pinched the encased sample of Americium and put it into his trouser pocket ..... }

Cheers, Mike.

I certainly hope that tradition did not carry forward to
this present day.

IE: The flying lessons :-)

Absolutely! I haven't been up much. Well it is winter - with so much wind that even the birds are flying backwards ....... :-)

Cheers, Mike.
