Hi folks, Well, now I

Hi folks,

Well, now I can't get the einstein@home screensaver to work on any of my three Linux notebook computers. I get an error message on two where BOINC can't read a specific file content even though it exists. And, one of these Linux notebooks loads BOINC and loads the work units but the screensaver star sphere doesn't appear even when I press the show graphics button which turns to stop graphics.

I give up for now.

Perhaps when this all gets sorted out to where when one updates 21.10 Ubuntu software under Astronomy Linux I will once again attempt to use it. But, for now, nope.

All the best...

John

This suggests perhaps a permissions issue ie. the rwx fields of the file per user/group. When you installed BOINC on these Linux machines did you do it as an ordinary user or as root ?

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Hi Mike,

I installed Boinc as an ordinary user, I don't know what you are referring to "...rwx of the file per user group". Perhaps you might enlighten me?

John

When you wrote " BOINC can't read a specific file content even though it exists " I immediately thought of file permissions ie. the Read/Write/eXecute permissions fields for the file. Now if I remember correctly I have installed BOINC on my linux machine ( Ubuntu ) as super-user/root ie. via sudo commands. Perhaps installing as root may help your problem ?

Cheers, Mike.

Howdy Einstein

Howdy Einstein brains!

Now, I have a new issue. I've updated my Linux version of Ubuntu to 21.10 and have kept this version updated as well. I have been an Einstein@Home participant for a number of years. Over those years I've had a myriad of issues to resolve. I had been successful a number of times. Now I have this new issue.

I purged all of the pieces associated with Einstein@Home and BOINC that I could find. I then waited a couple of weeks to get all the latest Ubuntu updates and perhaps the latest BOINC ones as well. I reinstalled BOINC with the Ubuntu Software updater.

I established a new link to my account and started up. To my surprise I got the starsphere to work. Well at least the units are being processed and the screensaver rotates. However, none of the keyboard controls function. And in order to get the starsphere to go full screen I have to click on the little square in the upper right hand corner of the separate window that holds the screen saver.

I have the same issue across two different Ubuntu 21.10 notebook computers.

This computer is running the following graphics: AMD® Kabini. As of right now I can't find how to update this specific graphics.

How do I resolve this issue?

Any suggestions will most be appreciated.

Regards,

John

I believe you can turn the screensaver off and just run it as any other app and use the processing cycles for crunching instead of pretty pictures. Don't get me wrong pretty pictures are great but they take cpu cycles to process and that means fewer cycles for crunching.

I, for a time, got the scrreensaver to run as an independent window. However, no keyboard controls. I recently updated my Linux boxes with Ubuntu 21.10.x and no more screensaver although boinc works just fine. It is just nothing happens when the show graphics button is pressed.

it is kind of weird that both boinc and the Einstein screensaver works fine on my other HP notebook running on Windows 10 home edition. It has done so for years!

Well, I will make this post

Well, I will make this post short. After leaving this computer off for a couple of days I started up again today to complete some updating house cleaning to get the latest bits. I also started the Boinc client with the einstein@home number crunching. I left this computer a while to eat dinner and watch one of my favorite movies, Blade Runner (1984 version). I returned to my computer to see if it had finished and reported any of the units, it had and downloaded and begun to number crunch the new data. On a lark I clicked on the show graphics button. Low and behold the rotating starsphere appeared once again.

The new data set is gamma-pulsar search. There are three other data sets - binary radio pulsar search.

I'm wondering if the starsphere only appears when the gamma-pulsar crunching is running.

Perhaps someone with inside knowledge could enlighten me?

Would it be possible for

Would it be possible for instructions to be set on how to activate the screen saver or which settings to make?

My operating system is Windows 10 Pro, with a Ryzen 5 2600X and an Nvidia RTX2070.

I'm grateful for any help.
