... while we are talking Greg, I hope you don't mind me mentioning this but it is (in my opinion) a little over the top to show two lots of the same stats in your sig. Some people show their personal and their team stats in the sig, in which case the second panel does at least show different numbers!
For one thing it takes up space on the board, if you made a short posting your sig could be longer than the posting!
For another it uses up bandwidth at both ends (on the stats servers and on the reader's connection that might be a dial up for all you know).
So I'd like to ask you to choose which you like best and take out the other. Both are excellent stats services so which you choose is probably going to be the one you like the look of best.
Oh, yes. And getting more complex as time goes on ...
Especially as new technologies such as the cell processor (debuting in the Sony Playstation 3) hit the PC consumer. :) I'm really looking forward to that.
I am not sure I read the write up correctly, but it was my understanding that the AMD with hyper-transport and without dual core still show up as one processor.
gravywavy,
would you like to be an author?
If I could think of a place to put that write up I would steal it ... but I cannot think of a good place for it to fit in ...

That is correct. My FX-53 has hyper-transport, and it doesn't have multiple 'logical' processors.

I have not had an AMD processor for awhile ... so I was not sure. If the glossary advertising is right, this is a place where they may get an edge on Intel. But, throughput wise, I still think that the Intel chips with HT still have the edge.
If we add in the Power PC chips, well, then, I would lean in that direction. If IBM had been able to put dual cores with a larger cache ... way killer ...
Thank you all for the detailed information. I've have been "playing" with computers for atleast the last twenty or so years...and never really gave such things much thought.
Doing E@H and that I should try to optimize my system(s)so that the researcher can have good reliable, accurate computations.
I guess it's nice to feel like you might be doing some good. I still have tons of qustions... but for the moment thanks.

That is what we all have in common.
Contributions to BOINC include machine time, replies on forums, unofficial support sites (like Paul Buck's documentation, or Willy's BOINCstats) are all done because the contributor felt like that.
Hi ~~gravywavy,
Of the OS, which is the most stable for thid kind of work?
Apple's OS-X ... :)
Seriously, I have about the same experience with BOINC on both Windows and OS-X ... I don't have a Linux computer yet ... though I have been thinking of getting a small $300 Semperon type with Linux so I can look at it for documentation purposes. And not have too much money tied up in it ...

The AMD technology buzz-word is Hyper-Transport.

yes please
somebody really should set up a wiki, so you could leave it to the author to decide that.
If you happen to find a wiki let me know ;-)
