Well, that's how it should be. Would be courious to know what your iBook makes of it.

There should be a line "Detected CPU type" in the stderr of the Results, 1 means AltiVec, 0 means generic.

Under the old setup, program

Under the old setup, program ran all the time, using all idle resources (both CPUs at 100%), Now it pauses whenever I touch the computer. It takes a long time to resume.

What was your "old setup" (i.e. which client version)? I remember that earlier clients didn't properly honor your "Do work while computer is in use" preference setting, the newer Clients should do this. Take a look at the general preferences in "your account", you may need to adjust this item to get the old behavior.

Just installed the 4.43 BOINC

Just installed the 4.43 BOINC Manager and activated Einstein on my 1.33MHz iBook. I also added SETI project. After a half hour or so of running, I checked with Activity Moniotr and and found that SETI and Einstein were both running at the same time. I tried suspending Einstein, which worked, but a second WU of Einstein immediately began to run, along with the SETI. I Quit BOINC Manager, restarted it and found Einstein only running this time. I'll keep an eye on it and report back if it starts running more than one simultaneously again.

Two "problems" so far: The Preferences menu item for BOINC Manager is greyed out all the time; and I can't read all the messages because some of them are longer than the page is wide - there's no word-wrap for the messages.

Hi C, The preferences menu is greyed out all the time, because all preferences are controlled through your account page. The "options" for proxies and languages are under tools. The preferences setting is just a default Mac interface item, but it is not used by BOINC. The issue with no word wrap is really a programming design issue and affects all platforms equally. That would be something to bring to the attention of the BOINC design team because it is common to all projects. Another "design" issue you may encounter is that the copy and paste of messages does not work on the Mac Platform and again this is common to all BOINC projects. These are issues that the design team is aware of (I think) and will work on correcting when other coding priorities have been addressed.

Your going to love the Altivec Speedup though. It is huge.

The new beta is screaming so

The new beta is screaming so far for me. 13000 seconds per unit instead of ~23000.

What is the Altivec? How do we enable it? Got the Beta 0.02 version going, seems to be running fine. Had to reset Einstein to get more WUs but other then that running smoothly. But what about this Altivec? Is it built into version 0.02?

Thx!

AltiVec is an SIMD unit that is built into G4 and G5 CPUs. The 0.02 App makes use of it, it doesn't give anything on a G3, though.

BTW: did anyone notice an increase of crunching time on a G3 between the official 4.78 and the 0.01 / 0.02 beta test Apps?

Can you give me a URL or email address to report the BOINC problems to the designers, please?

I found two more problems:
The BOINC one is that when I have the BOINC Manager window open and use the yellow button to minimize it. If I then click on the "B" icon in the menu bar, nothing happens - I have to go down to the dock and click on the app icon there to get the window open again. MenuBar would open the window from either place. Minor nit, I know...

Einstein is still not playing nice with the SETI client. I checked quickly this morning on the way in to work - messages said Einstein had paused at 0350, and SETI had resumed. Activity Monitor showed that SETI and Einstein were both running, and sharing the CPU at about 45% each. At 0550, SETI paused properly, and Einstein continued, but with 90%+ of the CPU. Screen shots of Activity Monitor available if anyone needs them.

I have installed Einstein

I have installed Einstein 0.02 on my Mac PowerBook G4. Very easy, it took just a few minutes. Speed went up by almost a factor of two compared to 4.78, as anticipated. The screensaver now works nicely. A small problem shows up with the direct display of the celestrial sphere (not the screen saver): I can rotate the sphere with the mouse, but I am unable to zoom (i.e. change the distance between view point and center of the sphere).

Thank you, Bernd, for encouraging me to try version 0.02 .
