hi,

im trying to configure one of my machines to only run cpu tasks for einstein so i made the following preferences for school for einstein:

Use CPU Enforced by version 6.10+ - yes
Use NVIDIA GPU Enforced by version 6.10+ - no

Run only the selected applications:
-- Binary Radio Pulsar Search - yes
-- Global Correlations S5 HF search #1 - yes

Run CPU versions of applications for which GPU versions are available - yes

-- changed machine location to match for these preferences.
-- not using app_info.xml
-- boinc 6.10.58 client

i thought by setting "Use NVIDIA GPU" to no, i would not receive any more cuda wu but some are still coming in.

am i missing something? just got 14 cuda wu. ill let them run out but i was hoping to only use this particular machine for cpu tasks for einstein since it is configured to run gpugrid on the two 570s and 2 reserved cores.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

configuration for cpu only wu?

Hi,

BOINC is using SETI pref's:

2011-03-22 02:57:27 SETI@home General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 21-Mar-2011 18:18:23)

Did you update SETI pref's afterwards? BOINC always uses the pref's you updated last.

Yes, but that are the general (global) preferences.

@alephnull: Did you update the Einstein project after changing the preferences?

Does your client still ask for GPU tasks after the last update?

The log for that computer

The log for that computer shows it's still requesting CUDA work. So that begs the question whether or not you set the preference correctly, and saved the changes to the web-site with the "Update preferences" button at the bottom of the page?

Don’t worry alephnull, it

Don’t worry alephnull, it sends you only ones new work for your GPU.

I had more or less the same problem.
I wanted work for my GPU from Einstein but forgot to set GPU=Yes
After the first installation of a GPU card I got GPU wu’s but Einstein did not send me follow-up GPU wu’s.
It’s a bug in the Boinc server software.
Good luck crunching for SETI.

i try to aways change general prefs through seti cause all my machines have seti attached so i know it will apply to all machines. individual machine prefs (wu type, resource share, etc) are updated from the respective project website. the seti update to my general prefs should apply to all projects, and my update to einstein prefs under "Preferences for this project" should apply to einstein only. this is how i understand this should work.

this machine has a work cache of 0.25 days so when i issued a manual update i got:

Einstein@Home 2011-03-22 08:38:17 update requested by user
Einstein@Home 2011-03-22 08:38:21 Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
Einstein@Home 2011-03-22 08:38:21 Not reporting or requesting tasks
Einstein@Home 2011-03-22 08:38:23 Scheduler request completed

guess ill have to wait until the current wu are complete and see what happens during the update. im assuming if all is well then einstein should only request cpu work.

yes, i updated the preferences as indicated and performed a manual update. looking at the preferences settings again to verify does show that they were saved.

im pretty sure this is not a bug with the boinc server software. im more or less thinking, as others have said, that this is more of a preferences issue.

ill wait till the cache runs down; it should by tonight, and then see how the update goes. i do run seti, but im trying to configure this machine for einstein cpu work only. all other projects attached to this machine (besides gpugrid) have "No new tasks" set for them. its still got 2 WCG and 5 CPDN wu to finish up as well.

ill check again when i get back from work tonight and see what happens after the cache runs down. guess i need to exercise a little more patience. thanks all for the suggestions.

Can you open

Can you open account_einstein.phys.uwm.edu.xml in your BOINC Data directory (default at C:\Programdata\BOINC\ for Windows 7) in Notepad and check that you have at least one line stating 1 in there?

OK, the thought behind it is

OK, the thought behind it is this:

If you have that line at least once in your account*.xml file, it got saved and BOINC should be following it. If you have this line twice in the same account*.xml file, that's a bug that the admins here know about now (I told them this afternoon :)), but at least both lines should show the same value.

If you don't have such a line, or it says 0, then the project preference "Use Nvidia GPU" set to No was never saved correctly. That can happen when you've got a very strict firewall prohibiting that, or even the normal glitches of not the whole message managing to come from the server and going to your computer. Part of the info could still be wallowing around on the internet.

Easily solved there by changing the project preference for the "Use Nvidia GPU" back to yes, saving the changes with the "Update preferences" button, before changing the preference again to No, saving again with the "Update preferences" button and then immediately opening BOINC Manager->Projects tab, selecting Einstein, click Update.

excellent, i think its good to go now. the cache is almost complete, just 8 more einstein gpu wu left. i followed those directions and issued the update and got:

looks like only cpu wu coming through now. youre right about the double entry for 1. i had two entries there. manually deleted one. issued the update and it came back. like you said, they both have the same value so i dont think its really an issue. come to think of it, ive often wondered why all the xml configuration files across all the boinc projects dont have dtds or schemas associated with them. probably better that way; maintaining those definitions can get tedious.

looking at my results for that machine its pretty surprising how much more credit you get for the cuda tasks than the cpu tasks. np though, its only for this machine anyway.

now im waiting for the work cache on one other machine to run down (maybe a day or two) and im gonna set that one up for seti and einstein only. that one will crunch einstein on the gpu so im interested to see the performance there.

thank you very much for all the help. take care.

Good to read. :-)

Yeah, that file is constantly rewritten by the project server, so any changes you make to it are wiped clean upon an update.

Much of it is easy to read, so if there is something in there that you don't understand, just ask. :-)
One thing to know is that it isn't real XML code, but pseudo code. So you can edit it with just about any simple text editor, there's no need for a fancy XML editor.
Oh, and piece of advice, never post your real on any forum. It's your unique key to log in with (on this project).
