choppy screensaver

Topic 194003

The past couple of weeks my screensaver kicks on like it is supposed to, however, the sky map rotation is not smooth like it was prior. As far as I can tell, nothing on my end changed to have caused this. But I can scanned for any virus which may have been sucking up my CPU (totally clean), updated my ATI driver, updated BOINC to the latest version...and still the screensaver is choppy. My WinXP SP2 settings have not changed, so I can't imagine what the reason is.

If anyone has encountered this before and has ideas or knows a solution, I would like to hear from you. TIA!

Yes, I have had that happen

Yes, I have had that happen on occasion (on a Mac) but I never did find the solution. After a while it fixed itself. Sorry I don't have more information to help but you are not alone. If you can, ignore it even though it is an irritation.

Thanks for replying. That is exactly what I have done, just ignore it, but that stance is not satisfying at all. I am still tinkering around to find a solution. Everything is up to date and virus free (as far as I can tell) so I'm still puzzled. Well, since this started happening out of the blue, may be it will disappear just like that too.

It's possible the problem you're having has something to do with the error seen in your last WU with a "Can't acquire lockfile - exiting
FILE_LOCK::unlock(): close failed.: No such file or directory" error.

This error was discussed in this message, though from my understanding of this particular problem, it deals with multi-processor systems and setting the cpu time to 100%. Since you are using BOINC version 6.2.19 ( unless you've just recently updated it and are still having the same problem ), there was also the suggestion that going back to version 5.10.45 could solve this problem with the error too.

You should probably keep an eye on your Tasks for computer page to see if this error keeps happening. I imagine this error could also have an effect on the screen saver if the WU's aren't being processed properly.

Thanks for the ideas, however, I am receiveing no such error message. As far as I can tell everything is operating fine, despite the sluggish and choppy screensaver graphics.

Actually, you did. This task, reported on 9 Nov 2008 1:45:41 UTC, had the error as mentioned by Byron S Goodgame.

Gruß,
Gundolf

[edit] In fact, that's the last time that your computer (GenuineIntel Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.60GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9]) had contact to Einstein. And the system version is reported as Microsoft Windows XP Home x86 Editon, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00), not SP2 as you said in your first post. That could explain access problems. [/edit]

Ok, when your next task does process, check to see if you find the error then if you like. You'll be able to go into the stdoutdae.txt file log in the BOINC folder as well, (and could even for the last one I spoke of), to see the error message if there ends up being one.

Along with the other info offered on it, there's also the [url=http://www.boinc-wiki.info/Can't_acquire_lockfile_-_exiting]Boinc Wiki[/url] page that goes into some other options if you do end up seeing this error.

I changed my CPU from 90% to 100% using the web interface, which was suggested in the post you linked in a previously reply. I still have the problem, and I don't see the FILE_LOCK error message in my current task, or the previous one either. Hmmm...

Thanks for the continued help!

The tasks on the task page are only left up for for so long (I"m not sure of the exact amount of time on Einstein) before they're deleted from the server. The task you've been working on since the 22nd hasn't been reported yet, so any info or errors it may generate can't be seen by me till it's been completed and reported.

If the task is completed could you please update the project in the Boinc Manager.

Screensaver issues usually are related to hardware or software issues. Making sure you're system isn't over heating is one possible answer. If it's been a while since you've cleaned out the inside of your pc, now would be a good time. Also running disk check and defrag may help, though I'm guessing you've probably done these already.

You could also check to see if there's any recent updates that occured around the time you started having problems through your update history at Windows update, because what was earlier stated

indicates your using SP3 and something has changed.

Also I should have mentioned it's possible the setting for the cpu time is set in the Boinc Manager, just in case that's what is actually being used, that would be located under Advanced in the processor usage tab under the setting "use at most 100% cpu time" in the Boinc Manager.

When you start up Boinc Manager copy and paste the message log here, if you'd like us to determine if your settings are global or local instead.
