The latest Einstein@Home discovery

I'm proud to announce the latest Einstein@Home discovery, which was published today in Astrophysical Journal Letters.  This identifies a "black-widow" pulsar in data from the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi satellite.  Our discovery resolves the nature of a mysterious source, first seen two decades ago by the EGRET satellite. We now know that the powerhouse at the center of this source is a remarkable binary system, consisting of a pulsar in close orbit with a very lightweight star.  If you want to learn more, the paper is open-access and is available
here .  Thank you to the thousands of volunteers who made this discovery possible by donating their computing time to Einstein@Home, and to those whose computers first detected PSR J1653−0158: Yi-Sheng Wu of Taoyuan, Taiwan, and Daniel Scott of Ankeny, Iowa, USA.

Good to see it has been published.

The Server Status page shows FGRPB1G work is almost finished for now (2 days left).

I don't know when more work will be available for FGRPB1G but it would be nice to get BRP4 running on AMD/Nvidia GPUs :)

Congratulations!

The star system is two stars orbiting each other. One star is pulling material from the second star to eventually 'kill' that second star...

The analogy is made with the Black Widow spider where the larger female spider eats the male spider for food for their offspring...

Because the Pulsar is

Because the Pulsar is "eating" up it's companion star because of it's superior mass.

...and it refers to a Black Widow spider that eats its male partner after mating.

Anton Petrov over on YouTube gives a very good presentation about this Black Widow star system:

e@h gets a good mention!

All good spectacular stuff :-)
