Been running Einstein, Seti fine for over 2 months, then Friday PC started shutting down reguarly, will boot fine after few minutes suggesting heat issues. Discovered CPU temp over 100'!!! Cleaned case, fans, re-pasted heatsink, no difference. Added another fan. No difference. Suspending Boinc tasks drops temp to 70'
Changed CPU preferences down to 1 core, 75% etc, updated, but doesn't seem to make any difference, still 100% CPU load and temp goes over 100' again. Suspending all tasks for now. (btw can play games like Oblivion, deadspace etc. for hours, no overheat issues)
Any idea's?

You probably changed the "wrong" preferences. ;-)

The local preferences override the online ones. So, if you ever left the local preferences (advanced menu) with "OK", you'll have to either clear them or set them appropriately.

Thanks. Changed local prefs to 50%, temp down to 75'. Still too high I would have thought and why now after running fine at 100% for 2 months? Motherboard/CPU now 15 months old and out of warrantee is probably the answer

Gotta ask, are those

Gotta ask, are those temperatures Celsius or Fahrenheit?
Yet even if Celsius, these are hardly a problem due to BOINC. When checking through search engines on your CPU, it seems this thing can overheat out of nowhere. You prolly have cool'n'quiet disabled?

You did not say if you took a can of compressed air and blew out the power supply and cpu fan, case fan etc or not. Dust is a major culprit of overheating and a good blowing out seems to help. Just make sure the pc is off when you do it!

The temps are in celcius,

Message 99899 in response to message 99898

The temps are in celcius, using Core Temp 0.99.7. to monitor. Cool n quiet is enabled in the Bios. Physically cleaned case and cpu fans with a cloth, blew out case, under motherboard, gpu, psu etc with my girlfriends hairdryer(nicky clarke ionic, has a cold button and a funnel, works a treat) Temp at idle 62', gets to 80' after a couple hours of gaming. From idle, jumps to over 100' in less than 2 minutes after starting Boinc, cools down just as quick when suspended, now stable at about 74' but set to 50%

You obviously used the wrong model.

But seriously, there is something wrong. 74 degrees celsius is way too much. I suggest you remove the heatsink, remove old thermal conductance paste, apply new, but not too much, replace heatsink.

Michael

PS: "thermal conductance paste" definitely sounds weird, but dict.leo.org tells me it is correct...

So, this is all my girlfriends fault? I KNEW IT...
Seriously though, already tried this but used what was left of the old paste from initial installation about 15 months ago. Will get some new paste this weekend if PC lasts that long

Always useful, a How To

Always useful, a How To Correctly Apply Thermal Grease walkthrough, this one also detailing how to get rid of the old stuff and how to correctly apply the new stuff.
