sorry, I see this was already discussed...
looks like I have to wait till after the task deadline
then I'll be able to delete the PC

hi,
New to BOINC, set it up on three PCs. One of them is too old and feeble to make any progress (completion time keeps growing, like the expanding universe) so I removed BOINC from it. But it still shows on my account. No big deal I suppose, but seems like there should be a way to remove a PC.

I presume you are talking about the 1400MHz Pentium M machine. It shows as having been assigned one task which will actually take two weeks to time out. The task will then be reissued and it could take quite a few more days and weeks to eventually get completed by someone else. There will then be a further delay until the task is removed from the online database at which point your host could be deleted.

You could save a couple of weeks if you aborted it now so that it doesn't have to wait to time out. You would have to reinstall BOINC in order to do that - providing you haven't already deleted the BOINC data directory which contains all the necessary details of the former installation on that machine.

If that data directory is still there and undamaged, a reinstallation of BOINC should find it and the task shouild start crunching again. So, the quickest way to be able to delete the host would probably be to let the machine finish the one task it already has started and to prevent further tasks from being downloaded by setting 'No New Tasks' (NNT) using the BOINC Manager interface. That machine should be able to complete the task in something like 24 - 48 hours. Once the task is returned and validated, it's well on the way to being deleted from the online database and then you will be able to delete the host.

If you really don't want to spend the time completing the task, aborting it straight away is much appreciated as that will get it reissued with the least amount of delay.

Cheers,
Gary.

I think my situation fits

I think my situation fits this thread well enough to not be considered a thread hijack.

I've added einstein to multiple computers including my laptop. It gives me a good way to compare processing power.

What is the graceful to request no more work on one computer when all the tasks I have are finished?

Searching these forums, I'm convinced there is such a setting but I can't find it.

I'd like to leave everything installed with the ability to restart it at a later date.

Thanks,
Joe

open boinc manager, click the projects tab, highlight einstein and on the left click "no new tasks" the status beside einstein on that tab should now show "wont get new work"

that will allow einstein to finish the work its doing but not download new work. if your wanting to remove einstein from the system wait untill the tasks have completed, you can then manually report them or let it report on its own, after that you can "detach from project" and if you desire remove boinc.

now if you mean you have tasks done, and your waiting to report them, you dont have to do any thing, boinc will do it on its own.

You got it right

You got it right Paul.

When I'm home the laptop is fine running jobs but if I leave town, I'll have enough notice to stop accepting new jobs, let them complete and restart when I get home.

I knew it had to be there somewhere. I guess my nose got in the way, it's so obvious(now).

Thank you,
Joe

ah, in that case dont detatch, just set no new work (NNW for short on the boards) and be sure they have reported before you leave, then when you get back home you can just allow new work and itl run as usual. :)

your welcome :)

It also sort of depends on how long your trip is, Einstein units have a 2 week deadline from the day you get them. So if you plan just a little bit you can stop getting new units until the day before you leave and then when you come back, as long as your trips are shorter than 2 weeks, you will still have some time to return the ones you crunched while away from home and to then get some more units. This would involve a smaller cache but that is also easy to adjust.

Good point Mikey.
Watching it run, it looks like I get about 8 tasks, 4 running and 4 ready to run (and usually 4 ready to report). They take on average 8 hrs to complete on this machine.

The controller does an excellent job of staying out of my way, and I rarely go more than a day or two without being plugged in with an always on Internet connection. So I probably don't have to do anything special but I probably won't want to worry about. We'll see.

Well if the units are taking 8 hours to finish and the units have 2 weeks before they are late you could INCREASE your cache size so you have enough units to get you thru your trip, without connecting to the net, and then decrease it when you get back home again.
