Topic 194864

After installing Dotsch 1:2 64 my usual email address and password were rejected when I tried to join my other computers in my account as usual.
So I put in an alternative address and have received work but can not join my team as the same username/email address is not recognised.

How can I either change to the usual id without wiping all the downloaded work or join my team after identifying the account?

How can I find my identity and join a team?

Well Well Well... Robert!

I can't say how it happened but a solution is found at
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/get_passwd.php where one finds
the method for identifying your computer by an authentication code on it.

Go to the BOINC directory on your computer (on Windows this is usually C:\Program Files\BOINC.
Find your account file for this project; this will have a name like account_lhcathome.cern.ch.xml (where the project URL is http://lhcathome.cern.ch).
Open the file in a text editor like Notepad. You'll see something like

http://lhcathome.cern.ch/
8b8496fdd26df7dc0423ecd43c09a56b
lhcathome
...

Pasting the string into the field lower down on that page will take you to the account from which the password and email address can be changed and you can join a team et cetera.

Um, but if you can post on

Um, but if you can post on the forums, you are already logged in with that account. When you're already logged in with that account, you can go to your account and change the password and check the email address.

P.S: I hope that the authenticator you posted isn't your actual authenticator. ;-)

I admit it may possibly

I admit it may possibly appear that I missing things but...

What do you say about installing a new OS, Dotsch, opening BOINC and trying to use you current account password and email address which works a moment before on another computer but is refused by the einstein.phys.uwm.edu server?

To get around that I thought I could join up and change or join my team with the alternative address I would use.

While what you say is true for the account that works it wouldn't work if when I tried to log in the alternative address wasn't on the list.

Personally I think you'd get heaps more people involved if you didn't have to be quite so into it to understand. Imagine if Google were running BOINCing how they might make it invisible and adaptive.

I await your solution to the id problem though.
And if you can I'd like to add the score a computer had when it joined the team. Apparently that can not be included and since half the motivation in this is building a huge score it would be nice to combine all of them.

What was the exact message that BOINC gave you? Do you remember, or remember along the lines? Is it possible it was stored in the stderrdae.txt or stdoutdae.txt file?

The one thing I can imagine is that the communication was blocked the first time around, or you inadvertently had Caps Lock on, or clicked another key while typing in the password, or such thing. By blocked I mean a firewall.

Did you ask Dotsch? You are running his all-in-one combination, so I'd expect that with problems you started with asking him, instead of expecting the project to fix things. He will want to know of any problems the people in the field have with his package. :-)

Ageless, It just said

Message 97640 in response to message 97639

Ageless,

It just said username and password not recognised or similar. I tried repeatedly and checked on another computer which worked. It wasn't caps lock or Dotsch I think since it has worked before with the same version of Dotsch on that computer. I was however reinstalling Dotsch because something happened with the bootloader and the only way to fix it seemed to be reinstalling the whole thing to also install the bootloader again. It worked except the logging in.

Lars, Dotsch, wasn't impressed with my stuffing-up Dotsch by letting his hybrid update from the Ubuntu server and the communication seems to dropped away.

It's all working well enough now so not to worry.

I'd like to emphasise the point that, like a lot of nerdy things, the necessity for Special Knowledge keeps people at bay and if this is to be a wonderful giant computer community it ought to take a look from the ab initio point of view.
That is not to say that the real science aspect of it isn't also a big attractor it is just that to get into it you need to assess it and most people with the goodwill to contribute may not find it is clear enough.
