Below is an app_info.xml that implements Bikeman's suggestions.

It assumes that you are currently using version 3.12 of the ABP1 app and version 3.01 of the S5R6 GW app. Since all the executables are already in place all that needs to be done is to create app_info.xml using Windows Notepad or similar text editor and save it in the E@H project folder. Then stop and restart BOINC.

I have no idea if running the _2 app as a 'standalone' in this way is going to work. If it does you can thank me and if it doesn't you can blame Bikeman :-).

You might also like to look through the app_info.xml to check for syntax errors and typos and also to confirm you have copied and pasted it absolutely correctly. If you want to get the correct formatting, start out replying to the message and copy and paste from the reply window. Then abandon the reply - unless you really do want to make a reply.

One final comment for what it's worth. I notice the problems with the GW app are occurring under Win7 64 bit. There seem to be a number of people reporting problems (eg the zero progress problem) under 64 bit Win 7. I wonder if these might be related?

Good luck!

It should do. I ran some like that a while back, while there was an argument going on about whether the SSEx optimisations were doing any good (they were - forcing a lower SSE level than the switcher would have chosen really slowed things down).

I set up a 64Bit Win7

I set up a 64Bit Win7 Enterpreise on a MacBook Pro (Core2), and the HierarchicalSearch tasks are running fine so far.

Another difference (than what Bikeman mentioned) between the Apps ABP1 and S5R6 is that the latter uses a zip library that is pretty old and caused some trouble before.

If there really is no stderr.txt in the slot directory of that task (Computer\C:\ProgramData\BOINC\slots\0 or similar) please have a look there and see if there is a skygrid_* file in there and what its size is.

I found 'skygrid_1090Hz_S5R5.dat' in the EAH project folder (not in the slots/# folder), size 659 KB

@Gary: many THX for the app_info.xml file. I created it in the EAH project folder.
I still have a S5R6-WU suspended in my BOINCclient. so I'll go to test it....

I'll report what happens :)

Can someone please explain those conhost processes? I've never seen them on my winXP/BOINC 5.10.45 system and just checked in task manager: there's no such process to be seen.

Gundolf,

conhost.exe is something new with Win 7. Take a look here for a full explanation.

In his latest message, Bernd makes a very good point about old and troublesome zip libraries. I'm sure I've had trouble with them before. Since LB hasn't said any more now that the conversation is back in English, perhaps you could compose a message asking him to run things (even the old way as he described in the opening post) until he gets a GW task that is stuck and making no progress. At that point could he check in the appropriate slot folder and see if there is a stderr.txt and a correctly unzipped skygrid file. If there is a skygrid file there, he could take a copy of the same skygrid from the E@H project folder and copy it to a temp location and rename it to have a .zip extension. He could use the OS to unzip it and see if the contents are exactly the same as the BOINC unzipped file in the slot directory.

If you could translate something along these lines into a message to LB, it would be much appreciated, thanks.

EDIT: Oops - LB replied in english while I was composing so cancel that request! :-)

Cheers,
Gary.

Of course the graphics works! :-). I deliberately included it in the app_info.xml file in case you tried to use it :-).

This isn't intended as a long term solution and there is no guarantee that a future task may not stop making progress at some point. If you see any more problems check the skygrid file as I described in the message to Gundolf. The one in the E@H project folder is zipped even though the name doesn't suggest that. That is why it is much smaller. The one in the slot folder will be much bigger in size as it is an unzipped copy.

Now it will be up to Bernd to work out why the use of the switcher app seems to cause the problems you experienced. Once he works that out and issues a correction, you should be able to do away with the use of app_info.xml.

Thanks for being patient while this got sorted out.

Cheers,
Gary.

Thank you, Gary, for the link. I had thought conhost.exe were something coming from Einstein.

As for the hanging tasks, they seem to hang before they come to expanding any zip files or even creating the stdout/stderr output file, which should be the first thing to be done :-). But since I never had that problem myself, I can only draw conclusions from the posts I read.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Thanks for all the info

Thanks for all the info guys... will try the "fix" tonight when I get home from work.

As I said though... I am also having a similar problem with PrimeGrid WU's... so doubt it is an Einstein problem... more something to do with the interactions of Windows 7 x64 and BOINC.

But again... thanks! No more having to abort Enstein apps!! :-)
