One of my machines has been getting the above message on all Einstein tasks recently. The tasks all end up with client errors. I have tried resetting the project and that doesn't help, I ran a chkdsk and that was OK. Everything else is running correctly and SETI tasks seem to be OK.
I've gotten this occasionally on other machines and usually just rebooting machine or resetting the project fixes the problem. In this case it's not going away. At this point I have detached from Einstein on that machine and will not reattach until I discover a solution. Error messages are below.

Thanks I just recently put a new anti-virus program on the machine. That must be it. I'll try excluding einstein from scans.

You'll have to exclude the BOINC data directory. The path is shown in the Messages tab after a restart of the client. [edit]The directory might be hidden.[/edit]

We have been looking for the cause of this error (on and off) for months now.
Could you tell us as precisely as possible which anti-virus program that is?
Please tell us if the error goes away if you exclude the BOINC data directory from the scanning, and please also try if it comes back if you include the data directory again.

I Just started using Kaspersky Internet Security. I understand it is a very good virus checker but I am finding it very intrusive. I had to go through quite a bit of trouble when I loaded the Cisco VPN client and now I find that it also interferes with Einstein.
I did not exclude the directory instead I had to go to a bit more trouble.
Bring up Kaspersky Internet Security, select My Security, select application control, select all under category, change all Bionic, and Einstein (I also selected Seti even though I was not having a problem with them) from "low-restricted" to "trusted" by right-clicking and then selecting "change status" and then selecting "trusted". After you have done that right click on the same file again and select "change status" then "custom settings." Pick the exclusions tab and check "do not scan opened files."
The items you will want to change can be found under the heading vendor as Space Sciences laboratory however I also noticed that some Einstein files also showed up under Vendor as "information missing." I changed everything having to do with Bionic including screen savers which was probably overkill but looks like all is running now. I'll report back when the files currently processing finish.
Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention I have not yet had an Einstein WU complete so I won't know for sure that everything is OK until that happens but the one I currently have running is at approximately 35% and the error has not yet occurred so I believe everything is OK now.

I've had a work unit complete on one machine now and the other is processing with getting "no finished file" message so I think I've got this solved.
Thanks all who helped for pointing me in the right direction. I hope this will help anyone else having the problem.

I have this set as follows:

It's been set this way for a long time and I haven't changed it. My problem started after loading Kaspersky I'm processing WU's OK with this setting. Fixing Kaspersky not to check opened files seems to have fixed my problem.
RE: I Just started using

Hi,
I'm joining this thread a bit late, but here goes.
I have considerable experience with Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) vs. BOINC project applications over the past 9 months or so. KIS is an excellent security suite, one of the best in the world, very popular with big corporate IT departments. But it requires some effort on the user's part. The price of security and peace of mind. I haven't heard any credible stories (yet) about any BOINC project apps deliberately containing malware, but IMHO it's only a matter of time. UC Berkeley is not a police force. KIS is only trying to help.
As noted above, the problem is not with the virus checker but the application control module. Each executable is evaluated when it runs for the first time and given a threat index score from 0 to 100, based on a number of factors. If an executable scores too high it's considered "suspicious" or "dangerous." Execution is held in abeyance and an alert appears on the screen asking the user to decide whether to allow execution or not. The problem is, the alert is only posted for a few minutes after which the application is automatically blocked. If you're not sitting at your computer watching the screen, too bad. The alert goes away and you then have to open the KIS control panel and hunt for the problem. You can, however, set KIS up to email you an alert every time it does this (plus a bunch of other actions as well).
The BOINC client, manager, systray and screensaver are all "Trusted" applications because they are digitally signed by UC Berkeley with a valid certificate. So far as I know, NONE of the various project executables, graphics programs, wrappers etc. are digitally signed, and in the Windows environment, this is a problem. KIS assigns them to a "Restricted" or "Blocked" category based on any nonzero threat index.
In the case of Einstein, it happens that the two companion S5 executables have a low index of 2 and 10 respectively, and are automatically Low Restricted. The ABP executable however, has a (suspicious) index of 80 due to its high memory footprint while running (plus no signature), and is automatically Blocked unless you respond to the alert. You then have to open KIS and change its status to "Low Restricted" to allow execution. Every time Einstein sends out a new version of ABP it's considered a new program, and this process is repeated.
Bottom line: if a newly attached or updated BOINC project application fails, it's probably been blocked by the KIS application control module. If you open the "Blocked" list, right-click on the application and change its status to Low Restricted, it should be fine on the next WU download. Change it to "Trusted' at your own risk. I try to watch the BOINC manager for newly updated versions of the various project applications. I then force them to execute immediately and responded to the KIS alert, if any. When using KIS, I believe that entering a scanning exclusion for the entire BOINC data directory is unnecessary and could be hazardous to the health of your computer(s). You could also run KIS with application control turned off, but personally I'd rather break out my Beretta Model 96 and shoot myself in the head.
EDIT: Forgot to mention. I recently upgraded my KIS from 2009 (v8) to 2010 (v9). The completely redesigned user interface makes it much easier to see if any applications have been blocked, and to find the blocked app & change its status. I'm out.
Best wishes :)
