Hi!

As you may have noticed, S5R5 is ending this week. We don't have a reasonable amount of S6 data worth analyzing yet, so we decided to look into higher frequencies of the most sensitive S5 data that we have already used for S5R5. S5R6 will start at 1000Hz, where S5R5 ends.

The search program used for S5R6 is the very same that's used for S5R5; we set this up as a new application in terms of BOINC just because of a different workunit generator and validator. If you are using a Beta Test ABP1 application package, you could and should copy a new application section "einstein_S5R6" from the "einstein_S5R5" section in the app_info.xml file to get S5R6 work when it becomes available.

In the next few days we'll tell the S5R5 workunit generator to write all S5R5 workunits that haven't been generated yet into the database. If all goes well, the database should handle that additional size pretty easily, but you never know. Then we'll start generating the first few S5R6 workunits and see how they are processed. If all goes well, we'll then let the S5R6 workunit generator run continuously, feeding new S5R6 workunits into the database as needed.

Hopefully the transition will be smoothly and go unnoticed for most participants.

S5R6

Just to clarify this a bit, the app itself is the same code (no downloading a new app) and the name of the app will not change either. For example, there wont be any 'S5R6' in the app name.

So you copy and paste (and edit) just three lines to end up with these 6 lines

einstein_S5R5

einstein_S5R6

near the top of your app_info.xml file (only for those participating in the beta test).

Cheers,
Gary.

Surely you need to replicate the section too?

    einstein_S5R6
    305
    6.3.0

        einstein_S5R5_3.05_windows_intelx86.exe

        einstein_S5R5_3.05_windows_intelx86_0.exe

        einstein_S5R5_3.05_windows_intelx86_1.exe

        einstein_S5R5_3.05_windows_intelx86_2.exe

        einstein_S5R5_3.05_graphics_windows_intelx86.exe
        graphics_app

Edit - and possibly reset the to 301 to match the stock app shown on the applications page for S5 #6.

I really don't know since I've never tried to do anything like this where the same app is being used for two separate sub-projects. I was simply trying to clarify and confirm what needs to be done by doing exactly what was stated as being necessary and no more. I was actually trying to pose the question, "Is this precisely what you mean?" but now I reread what I wrote, it seems more like a statement than a question, so sorry for that. When Bernd used the phrase "application section" I just took that to mean what was between the ... tags. I'm not a programmer so I tend to figure out what works by trial and error rather than actually understanding the language :-).

The main reason I wondered if the literal translation of Bernd's words was all that was required was that I thought that if a more complicated set of changes was needed, surely he would have put up the full file somewhere and invited those in the beta test to download it. After all a lot of people in the beta test wouldn't feel comfortable with making major changes to app_info.xml in case of stuff-ups.

Cheers,
Gary.

I suppose we'll just both have to try our respective mods and see which one works ;-)

All a bit moot while the scheduler is down, anyway.

Having each scheduler to

Having each scheduler to crawl through more than 1.5 million results slowed the database to a halt. However hacking around some inefficient queries in the scheduler we could speed things up quite a bit. The system seems to run stable again, despite of having a larger database than ever on a server slightly smaller than we used to have half a year ago.

This delayed us (i.e. the transition to S5R6) by a day or so, but I think things are even better than ever now.

Just wondering when the server status page will be updated to reflect the transition to S5R6?

Latest when I have more than just WWW access again...

In the meantime you could look at the intermediate generic server status page at http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/server_status_xml.php.

Now that S5R6 has started,

Now that S5R6 has started, which of the discussed app_info files above will actaully work?

Richard's proposal looks right to me.
