Hi!
Anyone planning to get one of those? With the official launch coming closer, some unofficial tests and benchmarks seem to suggest that AMD's new 45nm Phenom II should offer an interesting performance/Watt ratio for BOINCers again. The orginal Phenom hasn't performed that well with the E@H app, it will be interesting to see if the app is Deneb-friendly, so to speak.

AMD Phenom II "Deneb"
)
The overclocking potential could be good, since Intel 45nm quads are FSB limited theres a good chance the cheaper Deneb models will be a better choice than Q9300/9400. I consider one if i see ~4GHz under aircooling on cheap mainboards.

Sounds great but imo, cheap
)
Sounds great but imo, cheap motherboards associate often cheap components. I had enough boards in history with blown electrolytic capacitors and other such things. Only if you can buy a new pc every year then you don't need to think about it.
My concern with "cheap
)
My concern with "cheap mainboard" is attributed to the fact that the original Phenom could blow PWM circuits even at stock, expensive mainboards were a requirement for early adopters. Phenom II has much lower power draw so theres hope that they will have enough OC headroom also on cheap mainboards. And i already got Core i7 for main rig, cant afford to maintain 2 high quality rigs so theres a limit how much i would be willing to spend to upgrade one of my dualcore µATX rigs to quad.
By the way, solid cap boards are not that expensive anymore, up until recently solid caps used on boards were japanese made, now theres a selection of taiwanese stuff at a lower price which means solid cap boards are getting cheaper, in a few years time the old fashioned electrolyte caps could be history on mainboards/videocards. Gigabyte and others are already using all solid caps on some midrange boards, and for high end they use all solid japanese made caps. My EX58-Extreme is clearly marked "Japanese solid capacitors", Japanese is obviously a big deal for them.

well not the 940 version, seems same existing on chip DDR2 memory controler ... so likely not to OC any better than the current X4 phenom
perhaps when the 945 with DDR3 comes out and some good AM3 boards appear, but then that is back to 125w ...
... certainly there is not enough info out there at the moment ... so I will be waiting for a while
/added .. also expect the same memory "issue" running E@H with these "new" chips so don't expect them to be much better at running E@H than existing phenom

Your 9850 has nice CPU times here, whats it clocked at? Pheonom was always weaker than Core2 Quad across the board because of Core2s excellent execution cores and thats where AMD is claiming impreovements + bigger caches. Promising i think, and the memory controller can be clocked separately anyway.
Im not interested in DDR3 for this, with high end mainboards + DDR3 the price is fast approaching Core i7 levels which has considerable more power reserves. Better to wait for Core i5 than to blow money on an AMD or Core2 high end setup (unless Fudzilla was right about Core i5 overclockinability, considering his track record thats unlikely)

Well, his Athlon X2 6000+ is doing very well too, but note he's using the latest Windows beta app 6.10 which is 15..20% faster than the Windows stock app.

I hope to build a Phenom II
)
I hope to build a Phenom II system eventually, but I plan to wait awhile. I figure that if I wait, that'll give AMD a chance to improve the manufacturing process a bit, and maybe tweak performance and power consumption a bit.
RE: Your 9850 has nice CPU

The 9850 is just running stock. I ran into issues with using 4 x 1GB memory sticks with it when trying OC before. Have replaced the 4 x 1GB with 2 x 2GB sticks (good Santa) .. as expected a quick OC test showed much better stability ... so when I have some time I will be working through things again and seeing what it can do now.
The X2 6000 benefited from the 4 x 1GB sticks ex the 9850 ... it was running pretty sweet before but with the 1066 DDR2 class memory it has allowed running the chip at X2 6400 speed with no effort (the memory is just running as DDR2 800 with loose timings, previous memory in that system was running with very tight DDR2 800 settings). :-) so something else to play with over time.
As to the phenom II, like you pointed out, I am hoping the larger cache on those chips will help with the memory issues the phenom X4 chip suffers from. (they did not release an X3 version for nothing) Still I will wait and see before jumping in, most certainly until after the 945 version has been out for awhile. :-) plus that gives time for the "spare" parts pile to grow and beg for something to be done.
RE: ... As to the phenom

It's looking good, especially for an operating range of -200 deg C to +100 deg C and an overclock to 6.3GHz on liquid nitrogen cooling...

Sadly, it's no i7 killer in any sense. You're still probably getting better performance/watt with an Intel 920 over the Phenom II lineup. The only difference is that you'd have to get the package deal with Intel, while you might have enough existing hardware (mobo, RAM) to upgrade straight to Phenom II.
