Hi there! I am a newbie using BOINC. I have some strange issues and symptons going on that I do not understand.

Because of errors(?) being reported in the BOINC Manager Messages Tab I just finished "resetting" my Einstein@Home project earlier this morning. Now I see the same things happening?

Some background info first ...
I have one SETI@Home task currently shown as running and one Einstein@Home task running. There are no other tasks waiting to start. Even though the BOINC Manager reports the Einstein task as running, my Windows Task Manager shows it is not consuming any (or just very tiny amounts) of CPU time.

Also, Windows Task Manager reports one instance of einstein_S5R4_6.04_windows_intelx86.exe and TWO instances of einstein_S5R4_6.04_windows_intelx86_1.exe running. As mentioned above, none of these 3 process seem to be consuming any significant (if any) CPU time. Is it normal to have TWO instances of that program running?

Below are just a small sample of the messages I am repeatedly getting in the BOINC Manager Messages Tab. Any comments, advice, assistance will be appreciated!

What's Going On ???

Hi!

This kind of problem is often caused by a bug in BOINC. Do you have CPU throttling enabled (setting "use at most xxx % of the CPU") in the preferences? This feature doesn't work to well in BOINC atm, try setting it to 100% again and press the UPDATE button in the BOINC manager so that the changed settings get updated in the client. Hopefully this will solve your problem.

Yes I did ... it was set @ 90%, but I will try running it at 100% as there seems to be no overheating issues on my machine. As a side note, I am quite pleased (so far) at how graciously the BOINC software seems to relinquish use of the CPU to my other applications as required. I see no noticeable degradation in overall system performance.

One other question if I may. I am running WinXP Home with SP3 and have 2GB memory installed. For reasons of my own and not related to BOINC, I have set up my machine to have NO swap file, there is plenty of physical memory available. However when I look at my machine stats on the Einstein website, it reports 1897MB of "swap space" available ... I believe that number actually corresponds to the amount of "physical" memory available when my machine is just idling, i.e. all default services and start-up apps are loaded but nothing else is running. Is the absence of an actual swap file on my machine likely to cause BOINC any problems? Or do you have any other recommendations in relation to tweaking the BOINC software as it relates to utilization of virtual memory?

Thanks for your help!

Only 2GB of memory is not

Only 2GB of memory is not enough. You should on save side with 6-8GB of memory for setting NoSwapFile. But some progs will not start with deactivated swap-file. I believe MS has wrote a technet-posting with details, aunt Google will knows more...

Hello,
I too am getting a similar error. I am new to Einstein, but have been processing Seti for a while now without a problem. It is only on the Einstein WU's that are giving me these errors. I have a couple more Einstein WU's that will be worked on shortly; I will let them run and see what happens. Hopefully it was just those few WU's that had issues, but any insight would be great.

Thanks!!

Hello again,
I adjusted the throttling to 100% as you suggested, but I am still getting the same error only on Einstein WU's. Other projects complete without error. Any other ideas; or should I just forget about this project and move on to something else?

Did you already see this wiki entry? (I did an advanced search for "acquire lockfile" to find it mentioned.)
