BOINC doesn't have the ability to update itself so he must be refering to Kubuntu's package manager.

Use the package manager if you want to make it easy, it will install boinc as a daemon, no further configuration needed. All you need to do is copy and paste this into konsole:

sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager

I did the install with the package manager and it seems to work but it is not the latest version and I get messages about getting the later version so I shall now persue that.

I found that if I did the updates it did that automatically.

Sorry missed the question until now...I use Ubuntu and it says there are x numbers of updates to the system available. That is where I got the newer version of Boinc, it was just one of many. Now it is NOT getting the newest version of Boinc, it is stopping at 6.2.14, fortunately for me that is enough.

Well, it's up to the package maintainers. So until they get a new version shipped, you'll be on whatever you currently have. Another reason why I like to install myself. That, and I just may be an OCD control freak... but we won't talk about that.

BUT for those of us that don't DO Linux this works just fine. I installed Linux hoping to be able to have some more time to play and learn how to do some things but it just hasn't worked out that way. I leave it because it works and is a free OS. With very little effort on my part I can have a Boinc machine up and running in an hour or so from a pile of parts on the table with Linux. Windows can take a little longer because of all the drivers.

I also donate my old machines to the kids in Foster Care and Linux is really easy to load and it works with almost everything. Last year I gave 10 machines away. I get older machines, usually instead of money, when I work on friends computers.
