Yes that does make it tough, with an even smaller keyhole to look through than usual. ;-)
This is a basic General Protection Fault (in the Windows world), and the causes can run the gamut from heat and/or overclocking, to flakey memory, to graphics related driver problems, to file corruption and other disk related trouble in roughly about that order.

oh yeah the host is a standard PC, Athlon XP 2200+, no overclock, 768Mb ram, running xpsp2, it crunches for months without problem...
what's strange is that the 3 errors are different...

OK, one other thing I forgot to mention before is that the R4 app has been reworked some from R3.
Essentially it incorporates the R3 power apps and a 'plain vanilla' one under a 'wrapper' which allows it to determine the best one to run given the hosts reported math capabilities.
So it might be that it is selecting the wrong choice for your host for some reason.

Well, given the age of the system, I would not rule out a hardware failure. It would not be the first system that suffers from instability because after years and years of flawless operations (for example) the capacitors of the voltage regulators on the motherboard are finally becoming weak (sometimes to the point where you can actually see the capacitors swelling or bursting).
I don't think the switcher app could be an issue, in that case you should see similar error messages (e.g. "illegal instruction").
