The graphs posted by Stefan Wernli show above trend increases in new host registration, active hosts, and cumulative floating point speed since the beginning of March.

I've wondered how much of this might be driven by the high credit available to users of the beta Einstein aps. We are about to find out, at least as it applies to Windows users, as the lunatics collaboration has just released Windows SETI aps providing nearly double the productivity of the previous fastest SETI Windows aps in general circulation. If some of the Einstein increase has come from credit conscious owners of late-generation (Prescott+ for Intel, not sure of the dividing line at AMD) Windows hosts, then expect that to flow away in the next few days.

User increase and decrease

I mean this more in credit to E@H than to knock S@H. People who really want to crunch might prefer E@H and other very stable projects. S@H, lets face it, is underfunded and has issues because of lack of money.
That is not their fault, but I think it is true. So, I would think that real credit hounds would want to go to projects that don't have much downtime. This is purely my humble opinion.

There are other reasons for an ebb and flow .. my team does projects of the month and other teams do similar things ... so, if EaH were picked one month a lot of team members may come in for the period of the contest and then leave if this were not one of "their" projects.

Different machines will do "better" on different projects on earning credit and so that is another factor to consider.

But, the more troublesome issue are those that quietly leave because the project has given them no reason to stay ... a point I argued at length recently in SaH to the point where many dislike my posting style ...

Quite right. The unseen audience is vastly greater in size than the overt ones. A mere glance at host stats vs board posts gives that a very high gearing indeed. There are many excellent/credible reasons for both coming and going to a project, mostly related to 'psycho-social' aspects rather than a pure science/credit dichotomy. Ultimately I would think that 'comfort' in a broadly defined sense is a good quality for a project to aim for.

This reminds me of a reply from a dairy farmer friend of mine a few years ago. I was curious as to what, in his opinion, made a good cow. I expected something along the lines of litres/week, bufferfat content, protein percentage, bacterial counts, calving performance etc... but no : "I just want to get on with the b**ch!". The less you whack 'em with the polypipe the better.
Actually a happy herd is healthy herd. Profitable too ...

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

Hi all! Part of the

Hi all!

Part of the increase in April is due to SETI.USAs choice of E@H as their Project of the Month for April.

In general, is the increase in E@H participation caused by "credit-aware" users who want to get the most credits for their CPU cycles? I don't think this is the greatest factor, but some science grids and clusters may play a bigger role, e.g. this one, which is currently contributing almost 3 Mio credits per day.

The number of new users per month has remained almost constant. However the number of new hosts per month as seen in the quoted diagrams has risen sharply, I wonder whether this could be caused by the way the E@H app is used in some science grids. Is it possible that the hosts are attached and some time later detached again, maybe repeatedly for the same host, leading to a distortion of the statistics?

Anyway, science grid and cluster hosts seem to contribute a much bigger share of the total E@H output recently, probably because they are mostly using Linux and the stock Linux app now features SSE optimizations.

Plus, didn't someone mention engineering sample CPUs with as much as 8 cores apiece? Anyway I think we should enjoy it while it lasts, since people will begin to shut down boxes due to heat issues or go on vacation as soon as maybe June...

Since i'am NOT only interrested in S@H, decided to join E@H, since a couple off day's.

Only thing is, i don't get a graphic's view.
Installed BOINC 6.1.0. on an Q6600 @ 3,2GHz (9x356), 4 GByte DDR2-800.
S@H 50% and E@H 50%. Running WIN XP x86 Pro.

What could be the problem, sorry i'am posting in the 'wrong thread', i notice now.

Only for those with fairly new computers at least SSE3 capable. Sorry for me my old Athlon XP only SSE2.

Initial results from my AMD X2 systems still give E@H an advantage of 6-8 cr/hr if using the Windows Power App.

E@H just went past 150 TFlops

E@H just went past 150 TFlops , according to the Server Status page.

It's quite summer-like now (at least in Germany, the second largest contributor to E@H), so it's likely that (like every year around May), some users will cut back on crunching. I guess we are now pretty near an all-time high for E@H performance.

Yeah, I saw that, and was quite surprised to see us hit a record high for this time of year.

I've already cut back on my crunching, since the weather here has been somewhat warmer than normal for this time of year. It's expensive enough to run either the computer farm or the air conditioning. But, it gets really expensive to have the computers and the air conditioning fighting each other.

On the other hand, I was able to go the whole winter without turning the heat on even once. (I just let the computers heat the place, instead.)
