Thanks

Why more time but the same credits?

Hi!

Indeed, the runtime of tasks varies quite considerable, see this thread for an explanation of the effect and a tool to predict the runtime on your PC.

Unfortunately, the variance of the runtime depends on many factors like the app version you are using, and hardware specific details like memory performance. Therefore scaling the credits to exactly match runtime variations is impossible with E@H's current crediting scheme, because different hosts will show a different degree of variation.

Hi Zc_Science

maybe you should go to this site
Power_Apps
download the file, stop Boinc, put the unzipped files into the Boinc/project directory, restart Boinc and the times of crunching a WU will be very much shorter. Never mind that the working App is signed as before, the real crunching one is the new 4.36 App.

I did it a few weeks ago and the times went down from 26000 to 14000 sec.
And or you can overclock your PC a little bit. The E 440 is very good for OC. With normal boxed cooling it should reach 2.5 Ghz.

I have been toying with the idea of trying this a number of times myself. Part of the reason has been just about the time I'm game there's a newer version. A couple of questions I have are:

1 - What do you have to do to go back to the stock app. if you need to?

2 - Are you granted credits that are valid? And does a shorter time translate to less credit?

Thanks for some helpful pointers.

Set to 'No New Tasks'
Let all units complete and report, manually if necessary.
Close BOINC.
Remove the app_info.xml file from projects/Einstein folder.
Restart BOINC.
Allow new tasks.

The credits are predetermined by the project for each task, no matter how it is crunched as long as it validates the host will get the same credits.

(Not that you will ever need it, but here goes)

Set Einstein to No New Tasks.
Run down your cache, upload & report all.
Exit BOINC.
Navigate to your \\BOINC\\projects\\einstein.phys.edu\\ directory and remove the app_info.xml and *.exe files.
Restart BOINC.
Set Einstein to Allow new tasks.

When you now update Einstein it either gets the stock application again by itself, or it will after you reset the project. While the app_info.xml file is in the Einstein sub-directory, you won't get rid of it by a reset, so you always have to remove it manually.

Yes, they are completely valid.

The credits are given out by the server, they're fixed. They are no longer being calculated by your benchmarks and the runtime of the tasks.

So by doing more of them, you gain credit.

(I see Andy was there before me...)

Hi Arion
look at my results. All are valid.. and crunched very fast. If all Crunchers use the Power App the floating point speed (at the moment 100.3 TFLOPS) will increase terribly :-))

This would be good for the Project (more users processing faster work).

Before this can happen, it will be necessary to have logic added that will determine whether the system it is running on is capable of executing the advanced code (SSE capable currently). Unless that happens, older systems will start crashing (the science app, if not their OS as well) and this would be BAD for the Project.

If E@H can successfully solve the above and make the Power App the standard one, they will then have to reduce the amount of credits awarded (the old cross-project credit parity hoo-haw). This is good for BOINC in general (credit parity), bad for credit chasers, and possibly bad for E@H (due to loss of credit chaser systems as they bail for higher projects).

No good deed goes unpunished...

My . Don't worry about it. Regardless of which power app (applicable to your particular box and OS, of course), your computer will process work faster than the stock OTC version. I'd suggest keeping an eye on that apps particular thread on the forum just in case there are problems with it (such as the GNU/Linux 64 bit version, for example.)

Thanks everyone for the help.

Thanks everyone for the help. I guess there's no time like the present. Will let you all know what the differences are between stock and 236. Right now I am averaging about 12+ hours on a AMD dual core 64 4800+.

My X2 4600 (5% OC) running XP Pro 64 is averaging about 6.8 hrs per WU using 4.36 app. You should be able to equal or better that.
