Man, I need to pay more

Man, I need to pay more attention to what's going on with the boards. I've just been hammering away with the automatic applications on 17 sse capable machines and wondering why the project RAC has been going up so much lately!

After seeing good results on a 'crash test dummy' machine, I've taken this opportunity to get all 17 machines current with BOINC 5.10.45 and the win 4.36 einstein app. :) The last of the machines was only switched over as of about 2 hours ago, but the difference in times is already very impressive! That should make my final push for 2 mil cobblestones a bit quicker!

Thanks for the great improvement! I can't wait until you can fold in sse detection to the 'stock' app and I can go back to being slovenly lazy and letting BOINC do all the work for me. ;)

:-).

Yes, there are definite benefits from paying attention. Unfortunately, once you jump on the merry-go-round it's a lot more work to stay on and sometimes a bit difficult to know when and how to get off :-).

I hope you enjoy your significant added performance.

Cheers,
Gary.

I switched my wife's computer over about a week ago from CPDN back to Einstein after telling her how much faster the work was. NEEDLESS to say she's wanting to know why she has 4000 credits pending. Seems she's gotten tied up with someone who has been getting work for a while now, has 280+ WU's outstanding (only returned 2) and time expired is working its way up. Looks like if she doesnt' get anymore with this person as wingman it'll be April 22nd before these are reissued. Worst part of it is einstein is still sending out work to this wingman.

To make this relative to the above quote, not only is it important to keep up to date with the message boards, but if nothing else at least keep up with your system and what is going on with it. I assure you if I saw I had 280 plus WU's I'd DEFINATELY be trying to find out what was wrong.

Correction..... Not all of those credits are from Host but the majority are. And its only 231 workunits that are trapped, not 280.

Sorry for not having the right figures to start with and taking too long to go back and edit the original message.

No need to worry. By looking at the results lists of your computers, I've been able to work out the host you were referring to. I've already sent the owner of that host a PM to offer assistance in resolving whatever is the issue.

Whilst you can only see two successful results, there have actually been four since the host was registered with the project on March 17. Also, the current incarnation of that host is actually the fourth since the owner first joined the project in Feb 2005. The host has actually contributed quite significantly in the early days. If you look at what the host is claiming as opposed to what it is being awarded, you will see a clue as to one of the possible factors causing the problem. The mismatch points to an ancient BOINC client and sure enough the version is 4.19 which was current when the owner joined over three years ago.

The old client probably actually still works OK. It is deficient in one aspect though, that being the ability to handle "ghost" tasks. Whilst the website shows the host as having hundreds of tasks, I'll bet the local client hasn't got them in its task list. They don't exist as far as it is concerned and because it doesn't have them, it's continuing to request more work from the servers. This used to happen in those days and the missing tasks were referred to as ghosts. It was thought to be due to network flakiness, probably at the client end. This was such a problem at Einstein that Bruce Allen worked with the BOINC Devs to add code to both the server and the client so that mismatches in tasks lists could be identified and missing results could be resent by the server. Unfortunately the server can't do it unilaterally. It needs an intelligent and cooperative client.

So if the owner responds to the PM, a client upgrade will result in a vast flood of resends to the host in question, most of which will need to be deleted. At least this should speed up the reissuing of that work. Then a quick merge of the four separate HostIDs should result in a machine where its full work history can be properly seen.

Hopefully the owner will respond.

Cheers,
Gary.

Thank you for giving me a better idea of what is happening. When I saw XP SP1 I was guessing that for some reason there were a number of disk failures or something. I had thought about sending a PM, but didn't know if it was appropriate. I probably would have come across entirely different than you did. Though with the same offer.

I was more trying to follow up with Thunder's message

Thanks again.

Arion,

I wish your wife all possible speed at getting her pending credits, though I had to chuckle a bit at the amount. If it makes her feel any better, tell her I just copied THIS from my pending credit listing: Pending credit: 14,214.21

It has it's ups and downs, but generally you reach a point where just as many are falling off one end as are adding to the other. Personally, I'd rather a project use a healthy verification system than risk junk data, so I shrug and know that it will all even out in the wash.

I also had a bit of a giggle at the mention of someone with a 4.x client running! I was feeling a bit sheepish that I still had 4 machines running 5.8.x versions and I hadn't gotten them all up to at least 5.10.x! Now I feel like I'm doing pretty darn well! :)

Happy crunching,

Thunder

I don't usually jump on a new

Message 79733 in response to message 79732

I don't usually jump on a new version right away until after I see if anyone's having major problems with it. Nothing like installing a client one day and a week later installing a newer one because of some unforeseen bugs. As bad as I am about backups, I think I'd have a hard time locating a 4.x client though.

As you said, it all comes out in the wash one way or another. I think we just got lulled into a pattern with CPDN with those WU's taking from a few weeks to up to 3 months to complete. It was sort of "set it and forget it." I'm glad to be back to my primary project and having to stay on top of things again.

[edit]I think I have to set up now where my server will continue to run CPDN, my slowest box will run seti (not worried if things choke on that one), and mine and the wife's are back to dedicated einstein.[/edit]

Thunder got me started on

Thunder got me started on this by forcing me at beer point (Sam Adams). :P

Tonight showed me the update and I just got it installed, so I'll be glad to see my AMD 5200+ Dual Core take off on the next set of data. Guess I need to start watching the boards as well.

This app has been available

This app has been available for about 7 weeks now. Any ideas when it will become the default Windows app for SSE machines? Surely enough WUs must have been crunched by this now to know whether it is a good version or not?
