credits

They have no real world utility. You can't trade them in for a new toaster or whatever.

Most people use them for bragging. I find it fun to reach certain milestones.

Thank you for the info. Now I won't have to worry about saving up enough to get that new computer.

Another prominent use of the

Another prominent use of the credit system nowadays are "Team races". Two or more teams would chanllenge each other and tehn try to more credits within a given time. E.g. there's a "Race" between the "Planet 3DNow" and the "ESL" teams at Spinhenge@Home, which is even officially supported by the project team.

While the projects will benefit in terms of computing performance (even to a point where the Spin@Home admins asked to delay the race so they could prepare for the extra load), the competive nature of these events is bound to produce all kinds of flame wars and other conflicts, I'm afraid.
