For computers or notebooks that travel with people it is sometimes difficult around major holidays to complete a WU before the deadline.

I rarely have a deadline problem even when traveling where a computer will be off for only a day. But for major holidays where lots of folks travel for extended periods (like US Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years) it is frustrating get nearly done with a WU but miss the deadline.

This has been suggested before by others: an option/feature where a WU that is still being processed AND making progress but will not complete before the deadline should be able to report an update_status (maybe with estimated completion date/time) so server will not mark WU overdue and send out a new copy. Extending the deadline by 2 weeks should not be a big deal if client reports significate progress prior to deadline.

Not to seem too terribly negative, but, perhaps if one knew that one was going to be travelling, one could simply not get a result that, based on historical time data for the host, would not be able to be completed on time?

Since you are here in the United States, what about anyone that was affected by power outages in the plains states / midwest due to the ice storm? Should they have their deadlines extended too? It was no fault of their own, right?

How about victims of an earthquake, mudslide, hurricane/cyclone, tsunami, fires (like in California), or other natural disaster where amazingly the computer survived?

The only realistic way to do what you are asking to do is to ditch the current credit system and go to the trickle-based system that is in use over at CPDN...
