Heck, let's face it...Even running full out with what I used to have....I'm loosing ground the last couple months and really need an infusion of new cores.

see chart below.
World standings chart for Astro. Just how long could I let this situation remain???

Oh, I guess I could go to ABC at home or some other project where they hand out cobblestones like "free peanuts" at a "peanut days festival", but I won't. I'll get mine the "ole fashioned way" and earn them by spending lots on new computers.

Yeah, that's true. But, the real problem isn't the TLB bug itself. The problem is more with the BIOS fix for the TLB problem, which kills performance.

It needs to modify only two model specific registers in kernel mode. (after each start)
Howto disable the tlb-fix

So, does your performance testing reflect having the BIOS fix disabled?

Yes, it does. I dislike to waste the performance.

Tony,
And your reasons to "her who must be obeyed" this time was? :-)

Andy

I obeyed....
I only ordered ONE quad core. It wasn't two quads. OK...so it was one quad and 1/2 the bits for the second........and next week I'll just say "I needed to order a few more things that when combined with stuff I "already have" will get me a whole new computer (OK,...I won't say that the bits I "already have" were included in this weeks shipment"). "sheesh, honey, for only 400 bucks,,,I got an entire computer, What a deal...huh???" "can I shop or what???" I already prepped her a week ago by saying "You know I really wanted this computer, but I just can't see spending the money.....I priced it and it came out to $1200 bucks, so I didn't order it". (of course it really only came out to 900, but I added the fluff for the bits). Then she said "just order it", and I said "I'll go back and see if I can get rid of or find a cheaper replacement. Remember,,,this was last week.... So, Saturday when I placed the order... I said "I ordered my computer". She said "good" and she's so far said nothing else..

It's my hope that the younger married men in attendance, might learn something from my story....LOL

WARNING
The "already have" scheme only works if you already have LOTS of computer looking bits laying around to confuse her eye. It won't work if you only currently have one/two computers

My bits arrived, built and now crunching. Had to suspend Einstein until I d/loaded new app, so we will see how it goes soon.

I went ahead and ordered

I went ahead and ordered anyway. The getup will be here friday - I'll take pictures for y'all.

There is a bit of AMD brand loyalty going on here, but not terribly much. I'm constrained by my uATX case anyway so no matter what I cant go overboard with overclocking. Plus a Q6600 and a uATX board seemed to be more expensive.

GRRRRRR. I have the mobo,

GRRRRRR. I have the mobo, processor, ram, AC cooler, hard drives, but UPS for whatever reason decided my PSU's and vid card needed to percolate some more in West Columbia SC(less than 1 hour drive time away). They arrived there noon yesterday (29 hours ago), and according to the tracking info... are still there, now scheduled for delivery tomorrow.

On my last big Newegg order, UPS "lost" my two 20" widescreen flat panel monitors...now this.....

I lapped the new heatsink, installed everything, and now sit and wait some more.

Interestings. . .

UPS currently has one of my packages from Newegg sitting at their West Columbia terminal. (But, I'm more than an hour's drive away.)

Well, if it arrived yesterday around 12:29 PM from California, then our parts might have shared a bin on the same plane.

the UPS site shows:

WEST COLUMBIA,
SC, US 02/27/2008 3:04 P.M. ARRIVAL SCAN
02/27/2008 3:00 P.M. DEPARTURE SCAN
WEST COLUMBIA,
SC, US 02/26/2008 12:29 P.M. ARRIVAL SCAN

The newegg site says:

02/27/2008 ARRIVAL SCAN[I] WEST COLUMBIA, SC, US
02/27/2008 DEPARTURE SCAN[I] WEST COLUMBIA, SC, US
02/27/2008 LOCATION SCAN[I] WEST COLUMBIA, SC, US
02/26/2008 UNLOAD SCAN[I] WEST COLUMBIA, SC, US

Good possibility.

I just now checked, though, and it's now en route to Jacksonville. (Odd, that. The truck will pass right by Brunswick, GA, which is its next destination after Jacksonville. From there, it'll be put on the delivery truck, and be sent back south again to me in St. Marys.)

When I was little, I could

When I was little, I could remember my mother calling UPS "oops". Years later, I have a different name for them that will get this post deleted. UPS is remarkably consistent in screwing up package delivery - I wish I still had the tracking screenshot where the UPS system showed a RMA'd video card's two-time trek across the continental united states before reaching me.

My new hardware will be here tomorrow. It is gonna be sweet with all that POWER tucked into that little uATX case. Took me a few days to find an assembly of components that'd work to my satisfaction within the little dinky case.

Mmmm... Lapping new heatsinks... Now that's dedicated!

Hope your Phenom(s) fly as hoped!

I'm soon putting some Athlon X2 systems together. Main reason for that choice is to use an AM2+ board for good bandwidth and then go for even more bandwidth on the next Phenom steppings later in the year.

Why your jump into Phenoms just now?

Hope you're running Linux to circumvent the TLB bug!

Happy crunchin',
Martin
