I would put it down to the latest apt-get upgrade, which included quite a few patches for system tools. Maybe there really was a little bug in Ubuntu which manifested itself due to my hardware/drivers/software packages/whatever.
Whilst this is a bit OT, my experience with Linux has been with Ubuntu as well, although clearly not as much as you. I find it...hmmm...interesting that there are security updates every few days or so for all kinds of things in all kinds of packages. The big thing that the zealots that rose to power in my former place of employment harped on was how unmanageable the security updates were across thousands of machines. From where I sit, it appears as though there are just as many, if not more, patches being issued on Ubuntu as there are for Windows XP/2000/2003.
Additionally, in the class that I was taking, some update to python-tk made it to where an example in the book had no hope of working. Someone in the class who had not kept up with the updates was able to get the example to work. Those of us who did the updates would've had to have reprogrammed the example in Python to get it to work.
SuSE Linux 10.1. I went back to 4.02 after trying out 4.14. All went OK. As soon as I finish a QMC WU I shall try 4.16. No errors whatsoever on my PII Deschutes.

I've had 4.16 running on a CentOS machine, a Vector Linux machine, and an Ubuntu machine for quite a while, now. So far, no problems from any of them.
@Bernd--How much trouble would it be to recompile this for a SPARC version of Linux? I've just set up a Sun Ultra 5 with the SPARC version of Debian, and I'm curious about how it would handle some Einstein action. ;)
I just found and fixed the (hopefully only) reason of the "signal 11" problem that has been bugging Einstein@home on Linux for so long. I'll build another App and publish this for Beta Test soon.

I don't think the number of machines is worth the effort. I tried to compile E@H for Linux/PPC a while ago and found that some parts of the code apparently assume that Linux = Linux/i386. It would involve changes to the code I don't have time for right now.
