Hello all. I'm a bit new to Einstein@home and I was wondering what the significance of the credits were. Are they simply a personal merit system or what?

Yes, the credits are just a measure for the amount of work done for the project, and have no "real world" value associated to it. By measuring how much credits a PC can produce in a given time, it can also be used as kind of a benchmark for computer performance for a particular project.
The original idea was that a 1 GigaFlops computer will generate 100 credits in 24 hours, see this article from the BOINC Wiki.
