Sorry, I meant Mike ..you wanted to try out the Do-it-yourself Screensaver idea, right?

EDIT:

I love TOPCAT :-)

No problemo .... Norman .... :-) :-)

If the app drops the data onto disk ( +/- a new BOINC interface for this ) then the sky's the limit. Hopefully, I think, if the candidate file is sorted best to worst then it's a doddle. From memory it has of the order of ~ 10000+ entries, one per candidate. Unsorted there wouldn't be sufficient realtime, for animated screensavers, to sensibly incorporate.

One could be ( incredibly fancy for my skills ) flick off a second background thread every now and then to do sorting if needs be. Either way, you could have a default animation variety if no joy is ( yet ) emitted from that line of processing, and slide to a different animation variant if a sufficiently curious ( ?Hough ) level was triggered. Interesting possibles actually. I do like the idea of the E@H apps emitting a larger range of 'running' parameters for such associated apps like screensavers to peek at.

Keep the ideas coming! I'm going to try and get some sling/framework up and going for all us would be screen-saver authors to use ( as per the other thread on this ).

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

As an end-to-end check of the

As an end-to-end check of the detection hardware and software, some fake pulsar signals are injected by hardware into the LIGO interferometers. It seems that those include the same pulsars that were already inserted in the S4 run (for which the details are published), and I finally managed to visualize what must be "Pulsar #8" of those test signals:

This is a chart showing the E@H results for a fixed sky-position (the known location of the simulated pulsar) for different frequencies (on the x-axis). The y-axis shows the "significance" of the data point, a measure of signal strength.

As can be seen in the diagram, the signal is relatively narrow-band, but the E@H software makes it stand out pretty well from the noise around it.

As a further complication the signal is "moving" as the simulated pulsar (just like most real pulsars) slows down over time. If I understand the publications right, the signal has moved from the right edge of the chart (at the beginning of S4) to its "current" position in S5.

(AFAIK the frequency is already normalized to the solar system barycenter frame of reference. In the raw detector data, the observed frequency is additionally drifting on a daily and yearly base caused by Doppler drifts from the detectors' motion relative to the simulated pulsar.)

... and this visualizes the signal from injected Pulsar#8 in an all-sky view. The grid-size is roughly comparable to what was used in the S5R3 workunits for frequencies around 200Hz.

As the injected pulsars are the closest thing to "the real thing" we have, I guess this shows that it would make sense to visualize the raw output of the E@H client in the screensaver. At least you would be able to see something when running over some of the injected pulsars (some are too faint to be seen, tho, or lie outside the parameter space of E@H).

3) once the result is finished, you'll find a file named h1_FFFF.FF_S5R2_SEQ_S5R3a_N_M (where FFFF.FF, SEQ, N and M are numbers) in the projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu subfolder of your BOINC installation.

copy this to a different location, and rename it so it has a "zip" extension (it's really a zip file).

Where is the projects subfolder?

For newer BOINC versions under windows, it is typically in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC.

I found the folder and zipped to a new folder... I attempted to unzip to a ascii file and word or notebook doesn't work. What do you use to read the lines?

Thanks as always.

I guess there's a misunderstanding, you don't have to zip anything, just unzip.

Did you find a file named h1_FFFF.FF_S5R2_SEQ_S5R3a_N_M (where FFFF.FF, SEQ, N and M are numbers) ? Just copy this single file to a new directory, and rename it to h1_FFFF.FF_S5R2_SEQ_S5R3a_N_M.zip. Then you should be able to unzip this new file with about any ZIP tool there is, and the unpcked file will be an ASCII file that can be read by (e.g.) notepad.

For my personal use I'm doing it a bit differently, but that would be overkill for a single PC (I'm using a modified web proxy to intercept the result while it is uploaded, dumping the results to files which are read at regular intervals by a background job that puts the stuff into a MySQL database (the database size is 7GB for S5R5 so far) :-) )

There was no misunderstanding... That's what I did before I wrote you yesterday... and my pc is not interpreting the code:

(((( @«BÃ2 Å“@Z) Z 'Σ?‚¸`éH1 %Â2@g®¿@(1?¢T‡¾nѸ¾v6G¿ø_›¿‰,?OÂæ>Ã>ž†@¹M¤¿]Ã¥.¾ >ü{¬¿é—R¿!k{=Qƒ¿ßm‰¿Šì?
Zy?æl?ÑŒ™¿7¶à¿.Ë—¿J쳿‡‘úíÕ0ûO¾¯$@¯34@E+¿¦÷>¥¡·¿yoÇ¿CÃŒ?CEŸ?ÿÇ>G )))))

I think its just a matter of unzipping into the proper file. I am using a laptop but all the same I have a 110g disk dr with 1g ram.

I could stop but this is getting kind of interesting, don't you agree?
At anyrate, Bikeman, I do appreciate hanging in with a new guy.

No prob. May I ask what

No prob.

May I ask what kind of software you are using for unzipping (= uncompressing) the h1_*.zip file? Most of them would complain if they find that uncompressing doesn't work.

Note that uncompressing the h1_.zip file will produce a new file named just h1_ (without the zip extension). That happens to be the same name as the original file copied (and then renamed) from the einstein@home folder. Don't confuse the original file (which really is a zip file) and the one that is produced by the un-zipping.

I uncompressed the file hi--.zip and than tried to open the new file with a ascii (notepad, word, etc) with the same results. I than went to Google and downloaded another zip software: ezip and attempted to do the same with the same results. It looks to me, that the featured code/program 'hi--.zip need another application to read it. MY notepad and word isn't intrepreting properly...

So you are opening the unzipped program with wordpad? I don't think its my pc's resources anotherwise it shouldn't open at all. Has others successfully opened and are able to read the lines available? Are they using pcs or servers? I know Window servers are simply turbo pc's...

Thanks.
